Zyra unopposed in first legislature bid

Monroe County Legislator Wayne Zyra is unopposed in his first bid for the county seat that represents residents of Sweden, including the Village of Brockport, Riga, including the Village of Churchville, and Ogden west of Union Street. Zyra was appointed to the spot in January, foll-owing the resignation of fellow Republican Dale Rath.

Zyra, who is also running on the Conservative Party line, must stand for the remainder of the term which is only one year. He will have to run for re-election again next year.

Zyra said he will spend the next year working to keep taxes under control while being sure that human services are provided to those that need them. He is also very concerned about local economic development, "if we don’t become progressive and active, there’s going to be a problem in this county." Finally, Zyra said, quality of life issues are important – particularly the county park system and a possible performing arts facility.

A Town of Sweden resident, Zyra had served on that town’s planning and town board in the past.
