Long-time Lakeside Health System employee Michelle Toenniessen was named November's employee of the month. She works as a Licensed Practical Nurse in the medical/surgical unit of the hospital.

Toenniessen, a resident of Albion, was lauded by co-workers for the reliable, compassionate support she gives to patients and their families. "Michelle has a gentle presence and a strong influence," co-worker Bernadine Bernbeck said. "She has a keen ability for observing signs and symptoms in her patients, detecting subtle changes and reacting appropriately to those changes." Toenniessen was recognized at a reception in the hospital. As employee of the month, she received a gift certificate to the TWIG Gift Shop, a bouquet of flowers and a certificate of appreciation.


Romy Hosford of Brockport, a senior majoring in art education in the College of Visual and Performing Arts at Syracuse University, was among the 35 University students honored at the Remembrance Scholars convocation held November 3 in Hendricks Chapel. Remembrance Scholarships, among the most prestigious awards given by the University, honor the 35 Syracuse University students killed in the bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 on December 21, 1988, over Lockerbie, Scotland. Applicants for the $5,000 scholarship are asked to highlight their University activities, including community service.

Abigail M. Smith, Spencerport, is taking part in an internship this fall through Oswego State's Experience-Based Education Program. Smith, a senior human development major, interns at Fairgrieve Elementary School in Fulton. The Experience-Based Education Program at Oswego places students in internships that allow them to earn college credits while garnering valuable "real life" experience.


Army Spec. Frank S. Ehmann, son of Thomas and Gemma Ehmann, Spencerport, played an integral part in the Army's Joint Contingency Force Advanced Warfighting Experiment conducted in September. Ehmann, a 1997 graduate of Churchville-Chili High School, took part in the exercise as a motor transport operator with the 710th Main Support Battalion out of Fort Drum.
