Sweden adopts 2001 budget with a few changes

The Sweden Town Board adopted the 2001 budget on November 14 making a few minor changes to the preliminary budget presented to taxpayers.

The assessed valuation (the tax base) for the town outside the village decreased from $18,632,153 to $18,628,032 and from $11,444,497 to $11,441,447 in the Village of Brockport. This resulted in a one cent increase in the village tax rate - the original budget proposal stated a village tax rate of $26.58 per thousand of assessed valuation, instead the tax rate will be $26.59 per thousand of assessed valuation. The town-outside-the village tax rate was not affected.

A few budget categories were also increased in the final document: planning was increased from $14,000 to $29,000; a contingency fund from $10,000 to $15,000; and additional funds were appropriated to hire a consultant for the Comprehensive Plan review process. On the revenue side of the budget, projected sales tax revenue was increased by $20,000 to $170,000.

In other business from the November 14 meeting: The board discussed a request from Boy Scout Joshua Locke to help the organization build a new cabin (the State Street cabin has been closed because of hazardous waste contamination that has migrated onto the site) and a request from Daniel Markham to incorporate an off-leash dog area in the design of the town’s new park on Redman Road. No action was taken on either request.
