Golden Eagles to host NCAA playoff

On Saturday, November 25 (Thanksgiving weekend) at noon at Special Olympics Stadium, the Brockport Golden Eagle football team will host the first-ever NCAA home playoff game for any Rochester/Monroe County college. Brockport finished with a perfect 8-0 record for the first time in the school's 54-year football history and received a first round bye after being seeded #1 in the East. They will face the winner of the first round Springfield College-Montclair State game.

The Golden Eagles, ranked sixth in the nation as of this writing, have won 12 straight games dating back to the end of last season. With a final week scheduled bye and a canceled game against Mount Ida on October 28 due to a lack of players, Brockport will have played just one game over the past 34 days heading into the playoffs. It is their second appearance in the post season, having appeared in the 1993 EACA Northwest Championship game.

A trio of senior pre-season All Americans fulfilled expectations with running back Countlan Green running behind offensive tackle Josh Warner who has been scouted by over a dozen NFL teams. Senior Mike Haas is now 12-0 as the starter at quarterback. Defensive end Erik Ardenski led the defense as they allowed a best-in-the-nation 5.5 points per game.

Brockport has met Montclair State eight times going back as far as 1956. They are 4-4 lifetime including a 30-15 loss last year. The Golden Eagles have never played Springfield who leads the nation in rushing and is one of the top scoring teams in the country. Springfield lost to Union in the final week of the season 48-19 to drop from the ranks of the unbeaten.

The only other area school to appear in the NCAA playoffs was the University of Rochester when they traveled to and lost to eventual champion Wagner in 1987. Hobart is also in this year's field.

Sixth-year head coach Rocco Salomone and his staff have brought NCAA Division III football playoff action back to western New York. "It is a great honor. We just put everything together this year."
