If success could be measured with a tape measure, the business savvy of Carmen Amodio could very well span the entire roll.

Amodio, owner of Spencerport Building Materials Inc., located at 4655 West Ridge Road, has been a member of the local business community for close to 30 years.

In the spring, the lumber and hardware company plans to move its headquarters to a new building on West Ridge Road, across from Abe's Restaurant in the town of Parma.

The Parma Town Planning Board recently approved the project, which is expected to begin construction in December. LeFrois Construction Inc. will erect the new 30,000 square-foot facility.

Amodio said the time is right to move ahead and provide more room for his growing business. The new building, which is almost double the company's current size, is slated to open in the spring, he said.

"In a time where everything is being gobbled up by the big chains, there are few of us that remain and we're still standing," he said.

Spencerport Building Materials opened its doors in 1971 in Village Plaza, and in 1983, opened its current site on West Ridge Road. Amodio said the expansion will allow more space for more specialty retail items, such as hard-to-find woods and kitchen and bath products.

He said he also plans on opening a larger custom mill shop and showroom, and provide retail space for smaller businesses.

"We hope to serve the do-it-yourself market with exotic materials other places just don't carry," Amodio added. "We're going to carry things that nobody else does."

Amodio said he credits his success to catering to businesses great and small with quality products and prompt service, which has helped him maintain his customers' loyalty throughout the years.

"We're very service-oriented," he explained. "I have a good nucleus of people I deal with. It's a total commitment between our customers and Spencerport Building Materials."

As part of the expansion project, Sail-On-Carpets and VIP Furniture, both adjacent to the current lumber yard, will expand their retail and warehouse space from existing space occupied by Spencerport Building Materials.

Amodio's devotion to the area is something Parma Town Supervisor Rick Lemcke said translates well into the community.

"It shows a local businessman's confidence in the community," Lemcke said. "He's developed a niche in order to grow."

For the next 6 months, Amodio and his team of employees will ready the business for the big move. Nothing could prove more challenging, he said, and exciting.

"We started here and the west side has been good to us," he added. "I've had good customers and that willingness to always go that extra step."
