Red Cross, RG&E expand heating fund

Rochester Gas & Electric Corp. and the Greater Rochester Chapter of the American Red Cross will expand the benefits of the Red Cross/RG&E Heating Fund for the 2000-2001 heating season.

The program will be enhanced in two ways: it was open to applicants beginning November 28 (in past years it opened in January); and the maximum possible grant will be increased from $300 to $350.

The Red Cross/RG&E Heating Fund is designed for individuals and families who have a one-time emergency and who don't qualify for any government assistance. Applicants do not have to be customers of RG&E to qualify for a grant. They cannot be eligible for assistance from HEAP - the federal Home Energy Assistance Program - or from their county Department of Social Services.

The heating fund operates in Monroe, Wayne, Ontario, Wyoming, Cayuga, Livingston, Genesee and Allegany Counties. It is administered by the Red Cross in all counties except Allegany, where it is run by ACCORD. Grants are applied to a customer's heating bill and payment is made directly to the energy provider.

RG&E and the Red Cross are increasing the program's benefits for this heating season because increases in the national market prices of heating fuels, including natural gas, are likely to impact more families in the community.

Those who wish to apply for a grant can call the Red Cross at 241-4474 to make an appointment and to complete an application. The Red Cross/RG&E Heating Fund is financed by donations from RG&E customers and shareholders. Since 1984, the fund has helped nearly 9,500 families.
