Cell tower to be built in Hamlin

The Town of Hamlin has approved the construction of a 180-foot tall cell tower on town property near the highway garage. Verizon Wireless will pay the town $7,500 per year to lease the land.

Highway Superintendent David Rose said that eventually the town may move its mobile radio system to the new tower. Currently, the town's system is located on the Monroe County tower, but the Verizon tower will be higher and may provide better transmission of Hamlin calls. The mobile radio system is used to dispatch highway and water department crews.

The date for construction of the tower to begin has not been determined.
