Spencerport Area Chamber to honor community members

The Spencerport Area Chamber of Commerce has chosen winners of its 2000 awards. The awards will be presented at its annual dinner on Friday, January 26, 2001 at the Plantation Party House and will feature entertainment by the Music Department from Spencerport High School.

Thomas Friedo will receive the Clyde W. Carter Citizen of the Year Award for his involvement over the years with several civic service organizations as well as being a member of the Board of Directors of Lakeside Memorial Hospital. His nomination indicated that "this past year Tom was instrumental in raising funds necessary to bring the Vietnam Veteran's Moving Wall to Spencerport even though he is not a veteran."

William and Ann Hill and Robert Quataert, owners of Hi-Qual Heating and Cooling Inc., have been chosen to receive the Business Persons of the Year Award. Their nomination commended them for continually showing an interest in bettering the community. "They absolutely never balk when approached to donate door prizes," stated the nominator. Bill Hill has been involved with the Spencerport Kiwanis Club over the years. His business donated an air conditioner to help an Adams Basin resident with serious health problems as part of a Kiwanis Club project to assist a local family."

Virginia "Ginny" Swarthout, owner of The Unique Shop in the village of Spencerport, will receive the Civic Beautification Award for her efforts to promote Ogden's official flower - the daylily. Swarthout received the Business Person of the Year Award from the Spencerport Area Chamber of Commerce in 1994 for her many efforts to better the community.

Also to be recognized at the dinner will be a number of local organizations which have achieved milestones. They include Page Appliances, for 50 years in business; Durfee Chevrolet-Oldsmobile which celebrated 40 years in business prior to being sold during the year; and Suburban Disposal Corporation, for 35 years in business. The First Congregational Church will be honored for their 150th anniversary. Lester Merz will be recognized posthumously for his many contributions to the area. Lastly, Hover-Davis will receive special recognition by the Chamber's Economic Development Committee for their decision to build their new facility in the Spencerport area, thus helping to grow the local economy.
