Read-A-Thon emphasizes student's hunger to learn

In memory of a class mate, members of the Churchville-Chili Junior High Leo Club are helping sponsor the Richard Reisig Memorial Read-A-Thon. Richard Reisig was a hard working student who was dyslexic and found reading difficult. He worked hard at his skills and was accepted for ninth grade honors English and honors Social Studies at Churchville-Chili Junior High School. But, a few days before the start of school last fall, he was killed in a motorcycle accident.

From now through January 15, students can participate by filling a pledge sheet showing the number of pages read. Reading can be fiction or non-fiction books, text books, magazines, newspapers, short stories and poetry, to name a few kinds of material. Page tallies are then verified by an adult and students reading a minimum of 250 pages will receive a free ticket to a school dance in February. Students who read a minimum of 350 pages will be eligible for a special drawing with cash prizes totaling over $275.

Cash donations will also be accepted from school staff, parents and the community. For information, contact C-C Junior High Librarian Marie Barron or teacher Sue Slate.

Funds will be used to purchase hardcover books in Richard Reisig's memory.
