ProRally Driver’s Championship

Karl Scheible, of Spencerport, became only the fifth driver from the United States since 1976 to win the overall driver’s title in the North American ProRally Championship. Russ Hughes of LeRoy, who navigated for Scheible, finished second in the co-driver’s Championship. Scheible’s title followed his 1999 North American Production Class title which he won racing the VW Beetle.

For the 2000 season Scheible and Hughes competed in a World Rally specification Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution 5. The team piloted the 300hp, all-wheel drive car to two overall victories, and five podium finishes during the 11-month season. The team competed throughout North America including: California, Oregon, Minnesota, Pennsylvania, Michigan and Canada.

ProRally is an extreme sport, which can draw over one million live fans at some world events. Teams race in all conditions; ice, gravel, desert sand and mud in production based sedans. The routes are secret and can run for hundreds of miles over two days. It is typical for 50 percent of the cars to either crash or suffer mechanical failures.
