Monroe County residents can drop off their trees at the following locations for recycling. Residents save a valuable resource by having the trees chipped into landscape mulch instead of disposing of them in local landfills. more

Health issues survey results released
The Monroe County Health Department has released the results of an environmental health awareness survey taken by 182 Brockport and Clarkson residents this fall. The surveys had been hand delivered to 500 homes in the vicinity of the former GE and 3M industrials sites, and the surrounding neighborhoods. more

Friends remember John Cooling as a gentle giant. "He stood around 6'5". It was so interesting to see him walking down the hall with his third graders who barely came to his waist. He was a kind man with a big smile," said Anne Jurgens, his friend and co-worker. more

Gates Library to celebrate 40th anniversary
Gates Public Library will celebrate 40 years of service to the community with an open house on Sunday, January 7, from 2 to 5 p.m. more

New postage rates in effect January 7
New rates for all classes of mail will go into effect on January 7. The price of a one-ounce First-Class letter will increase to 34 cents, up one cent. Cost of each additional ounce will decrease from 22 cents to 21 cents. The cost of mailing a postcard will remain the same, 20 cents. more

Parma residents asked to participate in drainage survey
Parma residents are reminded that if they feel they have drainage problems, they can fill out and return the drainage survey that was included with the newsletter. For a copy of the survey contact the building department at 392-9449. more

David Goerlitz, best known as the "Winston Man" in R.J. Reynolds cigarette advertisements, recently delivered his anti-smoking message to Holley students in grades four through 12. more

Hill School students help three families
"Good things happen to those who do good things," Karen Carges tells her students. Fifth-graders in Mary Radack and Carges' class at the Hill Elementary School recently learned a lesson in giving. Upon completion of a class project of producing and selling cookbooks, the students were left with a profit and a decision to make. more

Third graders' cookbook funds trips and charity
Shortly after the school year started in September, Brockport Hill School students in Mary Radack and Karen Carges' third grade class began collecting recipes from their families and friends. The students hoped that cookbook sales would fund an adventurous field trip to Niagara Falls. more

Riga/Churchville senior programs
Senior Citizens of Riga/Churchville will hold their first luncheon of the new year on January 9 at the William Maher Pavilion, South Sanford Road. The luncheon will be preceded by a punch reception from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Those who attend should bring a dish to pass and their own place setting. Members will be contacted. more

Brockport girls varsity swimmers earn Sportsmanship Award
The Brockport Girls Varsity Swimming team received the Monroe County Sportsmanship Award for the Fall 2000 season. The team was nominated for this award by opposing teams across Monroe County who felt the Brockport team showed the best sportsmanship. more

Cadets improve to 7-1
Seniors Dave Branca and Eric Allardice each registered pins in fewer than two minutes to lead the Hilton Cadets wrestling team to a 36-21 victory over Medina December 21 at home. more

Cadets topple Eastridge
The Hilton Cadets girls varsity volleyball team overcame a 14-8 deficit in Game One and went on to a 16-14, 15-7, 15-6 sweep of Eastridge December 21 at home. more

Gymnasts compete in Oswego
The Victor Gymnasts competed at Christmas Invitational in Oswego in December.
Representing the Victors in level 4 were Kaila Curatalo of Hilton, Allison Freeman of Rochester, Lindsay Hawes of Greece, Maghan Clark of Rochester and Karylyn Coleman of Hilton. more

Hilton puts Spencerport on ice
The Hilton Cadets scored two goals in the first 46 seconds of the third period to overcome a 2-1 deficit and beat Spencerport in ice hockey December 23 at Genesee Valley. more

Spencerport Boosters to host 'Toys for Sports' fundraiser
The Spencerport Sports Booster Club is sponsoring Toys for Sports, a toy show and auction fundraiser that will benefit the district's athletic programs. The show, featuring antique and modern toys, sports cards and collectibles, will be held on Saturday, April 7 at Cosgrove Middle School. more

Spencerport native representing USA
One year ago, Mark Schwamberger was wearing the blue and gold jersey of the Spencerport Rangers hockey team, working with head coach Tom Donnelly. This year, the gold has been replaced with red and white as he represents his country skating for the U.S. Under-17 National Hockey Team and working with head coach Moe Mantha, a 12-year NHL veteran. more

Spencerport teams earn scholar athlete awards
The Spencerport Central Schools' Athletic Department has announced that seven of eight fall athletic teams qualified for the NYSPHSAA Team Scholar Athlete Award during the Fall 2000 season. In order to qualify, a team must have a team grade point average of 90 percent or above. more

SUNY Brockport athletes help needy families
Student-athletes at SUNY Brockport have donated $866.88 to five needy families in the Brockport area through the college's Holiday Helping Hand drive. more

The guys make the team
Usually one thinks of gender barriers in sports as being challenged by girls - young women who want to play non-traditional sports like ice hockey, football or wrestling. In Brockport, four young men are challenging the concept of what a cheerleader is, at least locally, by being part of the varsity basketball cheerleading squad. more
