County plans newsletters, public meetings

The Monroe County Health Department has released the results of an environmental health awareness survey taken by 182 Brockport and Clarkson residents this fall. The surveys had been hand delivered to 500 homes in the vicinity of the former GE and 3M industrials sites, and the surrounding neighborhoods.

The purpose of the survey was to assess the health education needs of residents in regards to hazardous waste contamination originating from the industrial site. The health department is charged with helping residents understand the potential impact of the hazardous waste on human life. It is the responsibility of the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation to make sure that the parties responsible for the pollution develop and implement remedies for the pollution.

Slightly less than half the respondents (48 percent) believe that they may be exposed to harmful substances emanating from the hazardous waste sites. Residents who believe they may be exposed rank the method of exposure as such: skin contact with contaminated soils, outdoor air pollution, skin contact with surface water or stream sediments, food grown in the community, indoor air pollution, and drinking water.

While many residents may have some health concerns, very few (24 percent) have spoken to anyone about it. Those few tend to speak to neighbors, friends or family. Less than a quarter of that 24 percent has consulted with their doctor about possible health issues.

Most people indicated a desire for more information about the contaminants present at the site and their potential effects on health. Residents also want to learn more about what type of medical monitoring is available to determine possible exposure to hazardous chemicals. Finally, residents want to know what solutions are available to clean up the industrial contaminants.

Survey results were mailed to all respondents and to those who attended a September public meeting sponsored by the county health department. Additional copies may be available by contacting Karen Paris Tuori at 274-6397. Based on the outcome of the survey, the health department plans to publish a newsletter periodically, the first is expected to be out by January 30. It will be mailed to all survey respondents and will be available at the Village of Brockport office, Clarkson Town Hall and the Seymour Library. In addition, the health department will host a series of informal, public meetings beginning in February to exchange information.
