David Goerlitz, best known as the "Winston Man" in R.J. Reynolds cigarette advertisements, speaks to Holley fourth- and fifth-graders about the importance of not smoking. Goerlitz also spoke to Holley High School and Middle School students.

David Goerlitz, best known as the "Winston Man" in R.J. Reynolds cigarette advertisements, recently delivered his anti-smoking message to Holley students in grades four through 12. A former two- to three-pack a day smoker who was featured in 42 Winston cigarette ads, Goerlitz made a historical stand against the tobacco industry by publicly participating in The Great American Smokeout in 1988. He also took a stand against the industry's advertising and sale of tobacco products to young people.

Since then, Goerlitz has told his story to over four million students throughout North America and abroad. In his presentation, he takes students behind the scenes of the tobacco advertising world, and focuses on changing the associations commonly made between tobacco products and glamour, beauty and "being cool."

The assemblies are part of the district's yearlong campaign to discourage students from using tobacco, drugs and alcohol, and to encourage healthy lifestyles.
