2000 Monroe County Firemen's Association Essay Contest

The year 2000 was the thirty-fifth year the Monroe County Volunteer Firemen's Association has sponsored a Fire Safety (Fire Prevention) Essay Contest. The essay subject for 2000 was Carbon Monoxide Detectors. Of the five schools in the Brockport area, four decided to participate when approached by Captain Mark Warner, the local representative. Brockport had six winners along with a number of students in all four schools that were recognized for outstanding essays. About 390 essays were submitted. Among the winners were: Charlene Callahan, Christ Community Church, ninth place; Lauren Brown, Christ Community Church, seventh place; Peter Van Hooft, Christ Community Church, fourth place and Jeffrey Shannon, Fred W. Hill Elementary School, also fourth place; Laura Bahr, Christ Community Church, second place. All of these children received a plaque and a monetary gift. From the Brockport Nativity B.V.M., Stephanie Borrayo received the first place award for the west side of the county. She received a plaque and a larger monetary gift. Her school also received a plaque and was presented with a traveling trophy to display for the next year. The students that had outstanding essays received trophies.

The Monroe County Firemen's Association would like to thank the students that participated, Captain Mark Warner of the Brockport Fire Department for distributing the material to the schools and picking up the finished essays and the committees for all the hard work of getting the material out, collecting and judging the essays.
