Booth-builders help out festival organizers
Students in Rick Miller's welding classes at BOCES 2 Career and Technical Education Center in Spencerport have been hard at work the past few weeks creating two new booths for the annual Churchville Lions Club Country Fair. Miller said he noticed the old wooden structures club members were using for food and information booths while helping out at the fair last August. more

Few attend meeting on Spencerport electric rate hike
A 10 percent increase on "hydro-electric" rates for Spencerport Municipal Electric customers, to cover current operating costs and bolster capital reserves, will not have much of an effect on bills when it kicks in later this year, Village Administrator Alan Scheg told residents at a public information meeting January 31. more

Grandmother is student of the year
Gladys Benjamin of Rochester is proof that it's never too late to learn. The 52-year-old mother of five and grandmother of 12 has been taking General Education Diploma (GED) classes through Monroe 2-Orleans BOCES since September 1995. For her dedication and persistence in working toward obtaining her GED, the New York Association for Continuing/Community Education, Inc. (NYACCE) has selected her as an outstanding adult student award recipient for 2001. more

New law to keep child molesters behind bars
February 1 marked the effective date of a new law aimed at prohibiting bail for criminals convicted of sexually abusing a child. It passed last year as part of the Sexual Assault Reform Act, according to Assemblyman Charlie Nesbitt (137th District). more

Allied freezer project receives planning board approval
A 90,720 square feet addition to the Allied Frozen Food facility located at 250 State Street, Brockport, has received approval from the village planning board. The approval is contingent on the design meeting comments from the Monroe County Planning Board and the Town of Sweden regarding curb cuts to Owens Road. more

Brockport battles West Avenue fire
Brockport firefighters, with assistance from Holley and Hamlin firefighters, battled a house fire at 481 West Avenue on January 30. more

Cluster housing concept presented
A week after Brockport trustees created a cluster housing zoning ordinance, Builder Don Hibsch presented conceptual plans for an East Avenue project to the village planning board. Hibsch presented plans that would show what the former Northrup farm property would look like if subdivided into 65 conventional residential lots and what it could look like if subdivided into 62-65 cluster zoning lots. more

St. Luke's to celebrate Martin Luther King Jr.'s life
The fourth annual celebration of the life of Martin Luther King Jr. at St. Luke's Episcopal Church will be held Sunday, February 11 at 4 p.m. St. Luke's is located at the corner of Main and State Streets in Brockport. more

Walker elects 2001 fire officers
The Walker Fire Department recently held its election of officers for 2001. Elected were - Chief B.J. Maier, Assistant Chief Charles Hungerford, Captains Brian Mohr and Greg Speer, Lieutenants Keith Butterfield, Edward Barth and Mark Flannery, EMS Robert Blank. Also elected were President Ray Northrup, Secretary George Doles, Treasurer William McDonald and Board member Thomas O'Leary. Officers for Walker Exempts are President Charles Morgante, Vice President James Way, Sr. and Trustee John Dear. more

Julie Leiston, a graduate of Churchville-Chili High School, is spending winter quarter researching the kinetics of emulsion polymerization as the first recipient of Rochester Institute of Technology's Daniel Pasto Co-op Fellowship Award. more

Free parent workshops offered by Monroe County
Free Not Me, Not Now Parent Workshops to further develop parent-child communication skills, solve conflicts, and learn how and when to talk to children about sex have been scheduled by Monroe County. Presenters are Dennis Boike, Ph.D. of Boike Counseling and Cookie Waller of Prevention Partners. more

Hilton holds public hearings on possible sixth grade shift
Hilton Schools' Assistant Superintendent for Instruction, Susan Allen, has organized a series of three public meetings to address the questions, concerns and information about a possible move of Hilton's sixth grade classes from elementary buildings to the middle school. more

Hilton schedules substitute teacher workshop
On February 21 and 22, Hilton Central School District's Office of Staff Development is hosting an orientation and staff development session for current and prospective substitute teachers. The workshop is scheduled for February 21 from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and February 22 from 9 a.m. to noon. more

High school sophomores who would like to "earn while they learn" in the WE-MO-CO Career and Technical Education Center Youth Apprenticeship program will get an introduction to the program in February. more

Parent University to be held at Hilton High School
On Saturday, March 24, at Hilton High School, a conference will be held to help parents, teachers, grandparents, caregivers and community members build parenting skills within a variety of workshops and seminars. more

Spencerport High School presents An Evening of Jazz
Spencerport High School presents its Evening of Jazz February 10 from 6 to 9 p.m. The night will feature jazz from a variety of groups: the Spencerport High School Jazz Ensemble, Spencerport High School Swing Choir, and special guests Mark Viavattine (drums), Bill Tiberio (saxophone) and the Eastman School of Music Jazz Lab Band, and the jazz bands from Fairport High School and Greece Athena. more

The machine shop at the WE-MO-CO Career and Technical Education Center is in the process of becoming certified through the National Institute of Metalworking Skills (NIMS). more

Chili Community Center winter programs
Creative Dance Movement: For ages 3-5. Children will be introduced to a very basic ballet, tap and tumbling movement. Ballet shoes are recommended. Music is geared to preschool child. Classes held on Tuesday from 3 to 3:30 p.m. more

PACE exercise program to be held
Hilton-Parma Recreation, in conjunction with the Arthritis Foundation, will be offering another session of the exercise program, "PACE," for persons of any age. The course will be held for six Wednesdays beginning February 7 and ending March 14 from 9 to 9:50 a.m. in the Village Community Center gym, 59 Henry Street, Hilton. Cost of this program is $19 for the entire session or $13 for those who have Preferred Care. more

Brockport pool-men earn second win
Senior Chris Steinkirchner qualified for sectionals and sophomore Scot Snyder was a double winner as the Brockport boys swim team defeated Greece 2 95-83 for its second win of the season January 25. more

Brockport soccer team earns Sportsmanship Award
The Brockport A.D. Oliver Middle School seventh-grade soccer team received the Monroe County Sportsmanship Award for the Fall 2000 season. The team was nominated for this award by opposing teams across Monroe County who felt the Brockport team showed the best sportsmanship. more

Chili Recreation winter recess programs
Horizons Roller Skating at Horizon Skateway: Tuesday, February 20. Bus leaves at 11:30 a.m. and returns at 3 p.m. Resident fee $6.50, non resident $7.50, includes admission, skates, pizza and pop. Children under 7 must be accompanied by an adult. more

Ogden Bears hold 2001 registration
The Ogden Bears of the Monroe County Pop Warner Football League will hold open registration for the 2001 season on Saturday, February 17 from 9 a.m. until noon at the Ogden Community Center, 269 Ogden Center Road, Spencerport. All registrants should bring a recent photo, copy of birth certificate, insurance information and a parent or guardian. more

Ranger volleyball win on senior day
The Spencerport Rangers girls' varsity volleyball team defeated Greece Athena 15-11, 15-10,
9-15 and 15-4 on senior day January 27. more

Saints gain first hockey shutout
The Churchville-Chili Saints received goals from Joe Ramirez and Lyndsay Wall and rode the 16-save goaltending of Dan Ramirez to the first shutout in the team's four-year history in a 2-0 victory over Bishop Kearney January 25 at the ESL SportsCentre. more
