State purchases Monroe, Livingston land
Governor George E. Pataki has announced the state's acquisition of 116 acres in Monroe and Livingston counties, providing new opportunities for the public to hike, fish and interact with nature while preserving valuable wetlands and significant habitat for migratory birds and wildlife. more

Ogden Presbyterian Church begins tower removal process
Since 1824 -- for nearly two centuries -- the brass bell has hung high above the farmlands in its tower atop Ogden Presbyterian Church. In the early years, the 972-pound bell was rung at sunrise to greet the day and again at sunset to end the day. It was also tolled to acknowledge that a member of the church had died. more

Parma Zoning Board approves cellular tower
The latest cellular tower battle in Parma is between residents in a neighborhood off North Union Street near Route 104 and the Parma Zoning Board of Appeals and Planning Board. The Zoning Board recently approved a variance that may permit the construction of a 180-foot tower on property owned by Rochester Gas and Electric Corporation (RG&E) at 1800 North Union Street. The applicant is SBA Inc., a company that builds cellular towers and then rents their use, and Cellular One is the probable tenant for the proposed tower. more

Stop signs approved for Spencerport village subdivision
Spencerport village trustees passed a new local law adding two stop signs to the intersection of Luther Jacobs Way and Coventry Drive following a public hearing attended by several residents, most speaking in favor of the sign. more

Spencerport student struck in front of high school
A Spencerport student was struck by a passenger car in front of the high school on February 5. According to Ogden Police Chief Christian Schrank, a group of students was standing on the north side of the road preparing to cross back to the high school after school on Monday afternoon, when Sarah Hubbard walked into the path of a westbound car. Hubbard was transported to the hospital where she was treated for several injuries including a broken leg. more

Students organize outreach for earthquake victims
Three members of the Sixth Grade Class of St. John the Evangelist School in Greece have organized a service project to help the earthquake victims in India. Shayna Wells, Alyssa Farrugia, and Kelsey Abelein are collecting money from all the students and staff in their school and sending it to the Red Cross. The girls contacted the Red Cross to find out how they could help the people in India. more

Brockport village plan to buy
abandoned bar might not work
A Village of Brockport plan to purchase the abandoned Shaker’s Bar on King Street received what may amount to a death blow last week. The State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) has declined to sign off on the village plan to demolish the decaying structure, stating that the eastern half of the building could have historic significance due to its own features and its proximity to the historic business district. more

After bus garage proposal defeat, Brockport moves on to budget
The Brockport Central School District won’t be scheduling a re-vote of its defeated bus garage proposal any time soon. At the February 6 Board of Education meeting, President Gary Zimmer told a group of citizens that the board is moving on to the 2001-2002 budget development. more

Brockport residents to discuss contamination
with environmental attorney
Brockport Village residents, weary of what they consider a lack of response from industrial giants General Electric and 3M to pollution in and around the forming manufacturing sites, are hosting a community meeting on Sunday, February 11 at 10:30 a.m. in the Student Union Ballroom at SUNY Brockport. Present at the meeting will be California-based attorney Ed Masry, of Erin Brockovich frame, who according to resident Kathy Snyder, has agreed to take on the homeowners' case against General Electric and 3M. more

Sweden reassessment notices delayed
Town of Sweden residents will receive notification of their new tentative assessments during the first few days of March. Cole, Layer and Trumble, the firm conducting the town-wide reassessment for Sweden, will mail out the notices on March 1, not February 9 as initially planned. more

Volunteers sought for study on Alzheimer's prevention
Eight hundred volunteers from upstate New York are being sought for the first large-scale study ever to prevent Alzheimer's disease. more

Brockport names Youth Assets Coordinator
Shannon Zielinski has been named Youth Assets Coordinator for the greater Brockport area. The new position is being funded by the Towns of Hamlin, Clarkson and Sweden, the Village of Brockport and the Brockport Central School district to help the community build the assets necessary for its youth to develop into successful adults. more

Welcome reception for Spencerport's new superintendent
The Spencerport Board of Education is hosting a welcome reception for new superintendent Phillip Langton the night of the February 13 board meeting. The reception, open to the public, will take place in the board room at the Administration Building, 71 Lyell Avenue, from 6:30 to 7 p.m. more

Windows course offered at GCC
Genesee Community College's "Introduction to Windows 95/NT" course is coming to the Orleans Campus Center, 456 West Avenue, Albion, Tuesdays, February 27 to March 27, from 6 to 9 p.m. more

Blue Devils volleyball moves on
The Brockport Blue Devils girls volleyball team defeated Churchville-Chili 15-3, 15-5, 15-10 in the Sectional Quarterfinals and advanced to a semi-final match with Greece Arcadia. more

High school hockey report
Brockport
The Blue Devils battled the state's top ranked team Irondequoit to a 0-0 overtime tie January 31 at SUNY Brockport. A goal by Dan Holding in the second period was called off with the net being dislodged before the puck went in the net. Goaltender Nick Unger stopped all 22 shots he faced including two in overtime. "We expected a defensive battle and we were up to the challenge," said Unger. "We're just happy to have shut out the number one team in the state." more

Rangers boys hoops fall to Arcadia
Though tied 45-45 with just five minutes left in the game, Greece Arcadia scored 12 of the last 16 points on their way to a 57-49 win over Spencerport February 2. more

Rangers swimmers earn Division II title
Senior Jason Phillips and sophomore Zach Grobengieser each were double winners as the Spencerport boys swim team defeated Gates-Chili 103-76 and won the Section V Division II crown on January 30. more

Spencerport wrestlers dethrone #1 rated Canandaigua
To paraphrase a slogan taken from Julius Ceasar and his conquests of the Gallic Wars, "Veni, Vidi, Vici," Spencerport wrestling team did just that on Saturday, February 3, in the gymnasium of the #1 New York state rated wrestling team of Canandaigua. They came, they saw and they conquered. more

Local women lead SUNY Brockport to victory
Sophomore Kristen Clark (Hilton) scored 26 points and sophomore Lynda Ferris (Brockport) added a career-high 19 points as the Golden Eagles (8-11, 7-8 SUNYAC) topped Utica/Rome (3-16, 2-13), 65-47, in SUNYAC action on February 2. more
