A Spencerport student was struck by a passenger car in front of the high school on February 5. According to Ogden Police Chief Christian Schrank, a group of students was standing on the north side of the road preparing to cross back to the high school after school on Monday afternoon, when Sarah Hubbard walked into the path of a westbound car. Hubbard was transported to the hospital where she was treated for several injuries including a broken leg.

"She’s a very lucky young lady that her injuries weren’t more serious," Schrank said. "Even when a car is traveling at a slow rate of speed, injuries to pedestrians can be very serious, even fatal."

According to Schrank, the driver has not been ticketed and there is "no indication" that the driver was speeding or driving in any unsafe manner.

Spencerport High School Principal Jerry Bucklin addressed students Tuesday morning about crossing the road safely. His goal was to reinforce the message that parents attempt to drill into their children’s minds from the time they’re old enough to walk: always look both ways before entering the street.

"Teens tend to think they’re immortal," Bucklin said in a telephone interview. "A couple of students who witnessed the accident were quite upset, as any of us would be. It brought home the fact to them that these things do happen to people we know. We have to remember to always be aware of traffic situations."
