Governor's proposed budget cuts Medicaid funding

The Governor's proposed budget cuts $327 million in Medicaid funding, according to Assemblymember Susan John (131st District).

"At a time when the State expects a nearly $3.9 billion surplus, it is unconscionable that the Governor's budget slashes Medicaid funding by over $322 million to nursing homes and by over $5 million to home health care services," said Assemblymenber Susan John (D-Rochester, Wheatland, Chili).

The New York State Department of Health estimates that currently 117,000 of New York state residents depend on the care provided by nursing homes. The Governor's budget cuts funds that could otherwise be used to improve care. For example, an additional 16,000 certified nurse aids could be providing direct patient care.

"The Assembly and I have consistently fought to make New York a more affordable, healthier place to live. Just last year, we were successful in expanding and simplifying the Elderly Pharmaceutical Insurance Coverage (EPIC) program - allowing enrollment to reach 215,000 seniors," said John.

"As this year's budget negotiations proceed, my colleagues in the Assembly and I will fight against the Governor's efforts to undetermine the ability of nursing homes and home health professionals to do their jobs. I will work to defeat any budget proposal that would jeopardize the health, well-being and independence of our elderly or disabled residents. Our senior citizens deserve better than what the Governor has offered," concluded John.
