Catholic parishes sponsor March retreat
The four parishes in the northwest corner of the Rochester Catholic Diocese, St. Leo, Hilton, St. John the Evangelist, Spencerport, Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Brockport, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, Hamlin, are sponsoring a parish retreat to be held at St. Leo's. This cooperative effort is responsible for bringing to the diocese two nationally known speakers who have worked together for 17 years offering retreats. more

County acquires equipment to fight terrorism
Monroe County Executive Jack Doyle has announced that specialized equipment to strengthen domestic preparedness against terrorism has been purchased and assigned to various local municipal agencies in accordance with a national program funded and sponsored by the United States Department of Justice. more

First Extra Mile Award presented
Supervisor Austin Warner, Assistant Recreation Director Mike Rath and Captain Wright of the Monroe County Sheriff's Department presented the First Extra Mile Award at the Hamlin Town Board meeting February 12 to Matt and Mark Jock of Hamlin. more

Flower of hope blooms to help reduce burden of cancer
Some 260,000 freshly cut daffodils from flower fields in Washington State will arrive in the Finger Lakes community this March to bring smiles to cancer patients and help support American Cancer Society's cancer research, prevention programs and services for survivors and their families. more

Gates-Chili calls are down - but firefighter response increasing
The Gates-Chili Volunteer Fire Department last year responded to 2,127 calls for help from local residents and companies. more

High school art teacher paints "Mister Red"
for Horses on Parade
Just inside Paula Crawford's Riga home is an unusual horse. It's one of her pet projects - a six-foot by eight-foot, fiberglass thoroughbred for the High Falls Brewing Company's Horses on Parade. more

Monroe County launches child abuse prevention campaign
Joining with the United Way of Greater Rochester, Monroe County has launched a major new initiative called "Do Right By Kids," designed to encourage community responsibility for the safety of young children and to decrease the number of children devastated by severe child abuse and neglect. more

Service Clubs thank community
The Brockport Service Clubs (Kiwanis, Lions, and Rotary) wish to thank the members of the Brockport community for their generosity during the annual Salvation Army's bell ringing campaign. Last December's efforts paid off handsomely for a grand total of $3,231.19. more

Brockport firefighters train in February's icy water
Brockport firefighters hosted an ice water rescue training seminar for specialized, and rarely used, rescue teams on February 11. Approximately 50 firefighters and officers from Hilton, Spencerport, Morton, Hamlin and Lakeshore joined Brockport firefighters at the rear of Station 2 in Clarkson to practice what they had learned in the four-hour classroom seminars. more

Clarkson Historical Society seeks artifacts
Over the past several years, the Clarkson Historical Society has been working to save and preserve the Old Clarkson School House from natural decay. Through the efforts of the Clarkson Historical Society much of the decay has been stopped. more

Comprehensive Plan update underway in Brockport and Sweden
The Comprehensive Plan for the Village of Brockport and Town of Sweden is being updated. Each household is asked to pick up a survey at the Sweden Town Hall, 18 State Street, or the Village of Brockport Municipal Building, 49 State Street, Brockport, and return it by March 9. more

Ogden appoints acting assessor
The Ogden Town Board has appointed Betty Everts as acting town assessor. more

Ogden Board rezones land for commercial development
The Ogden Town Board has approved the rezoning of 18 acres of land located at the corner of Route 531 and South Union Street from R-1 Residential to General Commercial. The request came from Dr. Peter Rivoli, who plans to build a group of commercial properties that would house such businesses as banks, offices, and stores. more

Three seats up on Brockport village board
Brockport residents will elect a mayor and two trustees in an election to be held Tuesday, June 19. The seats carry four year terms and are currently held by Mary Ann Thorpe (mayor), James Whipple and Norman Knapp. more

Churchville-Chili Read-A-Thon honors student
The first annual Richard A. Reisig Memorial Read-A-Thon was recently completed at the Churchville-Chili Junior High School. Reisig was to enter the ninth grade at the school last fall when he was killed in a tragic motorbike accident. more

Esteemed children's author
visits Brockport's Barclay School

Cheryl Harness, author/illustrator of historical books for children, gave a lively talk to third-graders at the Elizabeth S. Barclay School in Brockport on February 14. more

Gold Medals for all
On February 15, Kendall Elementary's auditorium was transformed into an Olympic stadium. Judy Weber, Kendall's Adaptive Physical Education Teacher, stood proud as she watched her special education and kindergarten students parade in for the Olympics opening ceremony while waving flags, banners, and ribbons. more

Historic schools to be recognized
Queen Anne schoolhouse or Romanesque campus, every historic school in the country has a chance to become famous: The National Trust for Historic Preservation is seeking entries for its National Historic Preservation Week 2001 poster contest. Cash awards of $2,000, $1,000 and $500 will be awarded to the first-, second- and third-prize winners. Deadline for entries is March 31. more

St. John's students do the "Write Thing"
On Friday, February 16, Toni Palumbo, a fourth grader at St. John the Evangelist School in Greece, was honored at a performance by Child's Play Touring Company at Nazareth College. She wrote a poem titled "Why?" which was dramatized by Child's Play. Her poem was selected from approximately 200 entries from local schools. more

St. John's students win scholarships
Four eighth grade students from St. John the Evangelist School in Greece have received scholarships to Aquinas Institute. more

Students raise funds for quake victims
Sixth-graders in Mary Pittman's social studies class at Brockport A.D. Oliver Middle School recently reached out to help earthquake victims in India by collecting quarters. They collected $525.15, which they sent to India through the American Red Cross. more

Students test their skills
There were 104 winners in the local VICA competition, which is judged by professionals working in the fields in which the students are competing. more

Chili senior programs
Damascus Shrine Circus - a trip to the Shrine Circus at the Blue Cross Arena on Friday, March 23. Bus leaves senior center parking lot at 10:15 a.m. and returns approximately 2:30 p.m. The cost is $3. To register, stop by the Senior Center at 3235 Chili Avenue. Space is limited. more

Riga seniors celebrate 25th anniversary
The Senior Citizens of Riga club turns 25 years old this month and more than 100 people - including charter members, town and village officials, and guests who came from up the street or out-of-town- turned out to celebrate in style February 13 at Gatherings at the Senator’s Mansion in Churchville. more


In Sports:

Blue Devils squeak by Pittsford
The Blue Devils were seeded third and were the second highest scoring team in the league. No one told 14th seeded Pittsford though, as the two met in the first round of the playoffs. Scoreless after two periods, the Blue Devils finally got a goal from Craig Willis with just 2:37 left in the game. Brian Abrams added an empty-net goal for a 2-0 win February 14th at SUNY Brockport. more

Bright Raven Gymnasts compete in I Love NY Cup
The Bright Raven Gymnastics girls teams traveled to Binghamton February 10-11 to compete in the "I Love New York Cup" held at the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena. Hundreds of gymnasts participated in the competition and Bright Raven came home with many top honors. more

Cadets win longest game ever
Valentine's Day. Thoughts of chocolate, hearts and, now for the Hilton Cadets, overtime hockey. Hilton and Webster met in the first round of the Sectional playoffs and went five overtime periods before the Cadets emerged weary and victorious 2-1 on senior Matt Piccone's shot that went in off a leg. The goal came at the 2:26 mark of the fifth overtime - equal to over 80 minutes of hockey - believed to be the longest game in Section Five history. more

Julie Hill leads Raiders on the short track
Julie Hill (Rochester, NY/Churchville-Chili) Roberts Wesleyan College freshman has exploded into the Raiders Indoor Track record books. more

Registration accepted for men's and coed softball leagues
The Monroe County NASF Softball Leagues are accepting team registrations for adult men's "D" slowpitch softball teams for Monday, Wednesday, Thursday or Friday evenings at Monroe County parks. Leagues are also available for Adult Coed Recreational slowpitch teams on Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays. more
