Cadets win longest game ever

Valentine's Day. Thoughts of chocolate, hearts and, now for the Hilton Cadets, overtime hockey. Hilton and Webster met in the first round of the Sectional playoffs and went five overtime periods before the Cadets emerged weary and victorious 2-1 on senior Matt Piccone's shot that went in off a leg. The goal came at the 2:26 mark of the fifth overtime - equal to over 80 minutes of hockey - believed to be the longest game in Section Five history.

After a scoreless first period, Webster took a 1-0 lead early in the second period. Hilton's Matt Donlon tied the game off a face-off in the Webster zone with ten minutes left in regulation with an assist from Eric Steiner setting up the overtime.

Both goaltenders made several game-saving stops in each overtime period. Sophomore Mike Collichio stopped 28 shots in total including all 15 in overtime. Defenseman Jason Greenwood fed Piccone for the game-winning goal to complete the upset.

Hilton advanced to the second round against top-ranked Irondequoit. They kept the game scoreless through two periods, but the Indians broke through with three third period goals to eliminate the Cadets 3-0.

Seniors playing in their final game for Hilton were Ryan Corcoran, Ryan LaLonde, Piccone, Greenwood, Erik Schiefer, Matt O'Brien and Brian Mastley.
