Recycling/garbage committee forming in Hamlin

Is there an economically feasible recycling/garbage collection program that the Town of Hamlin can establish for their residents? That's the purpose of the Recycling Committee that is being formed. Councilwoman Shirley Hollink is looking for volunteers to investigate what options are available for recycling/garbage collection. One of the most frequent subjects brought up by the senior citizens is the possibility of reopening the Transfer Station, Hollink said.

Although this may be one option, the committee plans on looking at several programs, such as how other municipalities handle their recycling and garbage collection and the resources available within the town itself, to name a few.

Supervisor Austin Warner is eager to get this committee involved in looking for affordable recycling/garbage collection. "Although our annual Spring Clean-up and Brush Pick-up works well for the large accumulations and winter tree damage," Warner said, "the weekly needs of those residents who are on a fixed income, have minimal trash or a large shot item, need to be addressed. Even though many residents have opted for home collection by a commercial enterprise, this option doesn't truly fit the needs of those cited." Hollink wants to schedule the first meeting no later than March 10. That will allow time to compile the information, make recommendations and request funding in the 2002 budget. Anyone who would like to volunteer for this committee, or just offer suggestions, call Hollink at 964-7528, or leave your name/phone number with the Town Clerk at 964-2421.
