New York State Historians Conference set for Rochester

An estimated 200 historians are expected to attend the Spring Conference of the Association of Public Historians of New York State (APHNYS) in Rochester from March 29 through March 31. The conference will be held at the Sheraton Four Points Hotel.

APHNYS was formed in 1998 when the County Historians Association of New York State and the Municipal Historians Association combined. It is made up of the historians from cities, towns, villages, counties, boroughs, and communities. It was organized as a support and teaching group for historians to aid each other in providing a better service for their respective jurisdictions.

Conference highlights include a session for new historians; the traditional address by Dr. Joseph Meany, Acting N.Y.S. Historian; seminars on new technology including costs and funding sources; and a class in the use of land records. The conference will conclude Saturday with a session on identifying and verifying underground railroad sites which will be followed by a roundtable dealing with the Western Erie Canal Corridor.
