Holley incumbents seeking re-election

Two incumbents are seeking election to two-year terms in the village of Holley’s uncontested race.

Gail Sevor will be seeking her third term as a trustee on the village board while newcomer Peter Dreher, who four months ago was appointed to fill a vacant seat, will be seeking votes in his first election.

"I felt I could do something for my village," Sevor cited as her reason for originally seeking election. "Now I just want to finish what I started."

Being part of the village’s board while they worked on getting the Canal Park built is a source of pride with her. "It was truly a joint effort by many, many people," she said.

The village board was in turmoil when she first sought to serve the public, she said. "There was a lot of negative publicity and a lot of things going on that were upsetting to the people within the village," she said.

Sevor said she truly believes that so much can be accomplished through cooperation and collaboration. Holley residents, she said, are fortunate to have a board that works extremely well together. That air of cooperation is one of the main reasons the village has been able to accomplish what it has, she said.

"Right now we are waiting for the State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) to tell us when they are going to rebuild Route 31," she said. "The project was supposed to have begun in the spring but I think it has been pushed back to 2004."

Sevor cited the rebuilding as another reason she wants to remain on the board. "I want to see our streets rebuilt, this will be a major project for the village," she said. "We have such a unique village square but having to drive through potholes to get there is not very impressive."

The semi-retired lifelong resident of the village said she truly enjoys what she is doing and wants to keep making a contribution to Holley.

Even though it is an uncontested race, Sevor hopes people will come out to show their support for the individuals who are working for them.

Sevor said her husband and children have always been supporters of her quest toward serving the village residents.

Peter Dreher said he has always been interested and intrigued by the local government’s workings. "I have always been interested in local government," Dreher said.

For a number of years, he said, he had been attending the board meetings. His uncle was the village mayor for eight years and Dreher said that offered him a different insight into local government.

A self-described free-lance construction industry worker, Dreher said he figures he has the free time to devote to the job of village trustee. "I believe that being a trustee means you devote quite a bit of your time to the job."

He credits the present board with making his decision to seek election an easy one because he said he wants to help carry on with what his fellow trustees have already started. "This board has a lot of experience and they are involved in some worthwhile projects," he said.

Dreher’s wife, Mary Jane, operates a trucking and excavation business. They live in the village with their sons, Paul and Kevin.

People need to be involved in the election process even if it is an uncontested race, he said. "The old saying that one vote can’t make a difference just isn’t true," Dreher said. "We want to see people get involved with their village."

The election is scheduled for Tuesday, March 20 and voting will take place in the village offices.
