SUNY Brockport men's basketball finishes its sweet season

For the second time in the last five years, the SUNY Brockport men's basketball team fell in the "Sweet 16" round of the NCAA Division III Men's Basketball Tournament, falling to Catholic University 69-64. Brockport finishes its season 21-9.

Brockport was led by freshman sensation Brandon Mills (Spencerport) who led all scorers with 21 points, while grabbing eight rebounds in 33 minutes of action. Mills was 8-of-12 from the field and 5-of-9 from the charity stripe. Also scoring in double-digits for Brockport was sophomore Mike Medbury (Darien/Attica), who scored 13 points, while collecting four rebounds and three assists, and junior Ricky Hollis (Rochester/East) scored 12 points while collecting a record seven steals.

Hollis set a tournament record with his seven steals, breaking the record of five. The team also broke the tournament record of 13 steals. Brockport collected 19 steals against Catholic, with junior Erick Mateo (Brooklyn/Eastern District) collecting five steals as well. Mateo finished the game with four points.

Brockport advanced to the NCAAs by earning the automatic bid from the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC). In the finals, Brockport upset Cortland, 69-63, to win its fifth SUNYAC Championship and first since the 1993-94 season.
