on village subdivision proposal

Brockport Planning Board Chairman Tom Hare has requested that the village take several steps regarding a subdivision proposal for the south side of East Avenue. The proposal, in the conceptual design phase, drew a crowd of over 70 people to a public hearing last week.

At the March 19 Village Board meeting, Hare asked trustees to request a study of East Avenue by Monroe County to determine the impact of new subdivisions on both sides of East Avenue which serves as the border between the Towns of Clarkson and Sweden. He also asked that the village traffic committee study speed on the road, and if appropriate, submit a request to the county to lower the speed.

Hare would also like the village to do a structural check of the Havenwood bridge to make sure it is sound enough to carry increased heavy traffic that may result if the Hibsch plans are approved. At the request of some residents at the public hearing, Hare said the planning board consulted the village attorney to make sure it is appropriate for the planning board to serve as lead agency during an environmental review of the proposal. Village Attorney Roy Heise said that the lead agency role is acceptable and even typical of the planning board's duties.

Finally, Hare reported that the planning board will probably not re-open the public hearing on the Hibsch proposal until at least May. "We're not going to rush anything," Hare said. "The applicant isn't trying to rush anything. There are a lot of concerns out there and we're going to handle them."

In other business from the March 19 village board meeting: A committee studying the feasibility of a community center continues to meet and will tour a half dozen area community centers over the next few weeks. Representatives from the Village of Brockport and Towns of Sweden, Clarkson and Hamlin have been meeting for several months about the concept. Chuck Switzer, a Brockport resident, is the chairman of the committee.

The board approved a request by the Town of Sweden to move Voting District Number One from the Market Street fire hall to the Village Hall, 49 State Street.

Annual Spring Clean-up dates were set for April 23-27.
