2001 Orleans County 4-H Fair theme chosen

The theme for the 2001 Orleans County Fair is "Orleans County 4-H Fair - Sowing the Seeds of Excellence."

This theme reflects the fair's emphasis on youth development as well as the Danish Scoring System used as the criteria in the awarding of ribbons. (A blue ribbon symbolizes excellence). Says Margo Bowerman, 4-H Youth Development Educator, Agriculture and Natural Resources, "The Danish system represents one of the pillars of 4-H. This system allows youth to be judged against a standard rather than against each other. While it provides the opportunity for recognition of mastery of a subject or a craft it also provides room to focus on improvement and a cushion to help develop self-confidence for the young person."

The fair reflects the agricultural heritage of Orleans County and serves as a showcase for the year-long efforts of 4-H members. While 4-H has traditionally been strongly focused on agriculture and home economics, it has expanded its scope to projects in areas such as natural resources, science and technology, communication, citizenship, and more. This year there will be added emphasis on agricultural awareness through the use of exhibits and demonstrations throughout the fairgrounds. Fair planners have entered a state-wide contest sponsored by New York State Ag & Markets that awards a cash prize to fairs that best incorporate agriculture education into the total fair experience. 4-H clubs, 4-H leaders, fair planners, sponsors and other community organizations are all invited to participate in the effort.
