Melissa Hudson of Spencerport was named to the dean's list for the fall 2000 semester at Monroe Community College.

She was a 2000 graduate from Churchville-Chili High School, and is majoring in psychology.


Jason Johansen, son of Mr. and Mrs. Garland Solt of Sweden, has been accepted as a member of the Spirit of America National Honor Band 2001 for its 24th Annual Performing Tour of Europe. He will be representing the state of New York and the community of Brockport as an emissary to the people of Western Europe.

Chosen on the basis of maturity, performance, and the ability to represent the best of American youth, Johansen will join other selected students from across the United States on June 26 at the State University of West Georgia for five days of preparation and orientation before leaving on July 1 for the 15 days of touring and performing.

The Spirit of America National Honor Band will tour and perform in Luxembourg, Austria, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Germany, Holland, France and Belgium. They will perform for the diplomatic community as well as for thousands of people in Geneva, Switzerland, on the Fourth of July at a celebration hosted by the American Club of Geneva.

On July 14, Spirit of America will compete at the World Music Contest in Kerkrade, Holland, an event likened to a musical Olympics which occurs only once every four years. In addition, they will be performing in the newly established Festival Internationale d'Musique in Luxembourg.

Johansen is a 2000 graduate of Brockport High School from which he received an Instrumental Music Scholarship. He is currently an Instrumental Music Major at Roberts Wesleyan College in North Chili. He is a member of the Wind Ensemble, Jazz Band and Jazz Ensembles and has performed in the community musical.

Erin Lemcke of Spencer Road, Hilton, has been named to the dean's list for the winter quarter at Rochester Institute of Technology. A first-year student in the diagnostic medical sonography program in the College of Science, Lemcke is the child of Rick and Donna Lemcke, Spencer Road, Hilton and Larwood Drive, Rochester and a 2000 graduate of Aquinas Institute of Rochester.


Brockport High School Junior Varsity Basketball Coach Chris Crowell presented Tony Liccione with the Most Valuable Player Award at the March 11, 2001 Annual Basketball Banquet. In presenting Tony with his award he made the following comments:

"Tony Liccione is the most consistent player of the entire season in points, blocks and rebounds. He is a smooth offensive player under the basket and a tough rebounder who will do anything to help the team. He will be a very good player on the varsity team next year."

"Liccione was chosen by his team as the recipient of this year's MVP Award. He was the leading scorer and the top three in rebounding. He leads the team in blocks. He is a very good leader, a coachable player who will make a big impact at the varsity level," the coach said.

Liccione was the team co-captain this season.


84 Lumber Company has hired Richard Beyrle as Manager Trainee at the 84 Lumber in Greece. Beyrle is a native of Hamlin, graduated from R.L. Thomas High School in 1972 and is a 1999 graduate of RIT. He is the son of Donald and Nina Beyrle of Rochester. Beyrle resides in Hamlin, with his wife, Lisa, and their sons, Christopher and Nicholas. As manager trainee, Beyrle is responsible for sales, estimating and material takeoffs, performing in-store merchandising and maintaining store and yard appearance.

Gavin William Hickey of Spencerport has accepted membership in Golden Key National Honor Society and was individually honored during a campus ceremony.

"It is only fitting that a high academic achiever like Gavin be recognized by Golden Key," said Jim Lewis, Golden Key founder and executive director. "Our members are inspired and motivated by the challenge not only to be recognized for their outstanding accomplishments but also to make a positive impact on our world through the Society's commitment to service."


Local writer Caurie Ann Miner of Brockport has written a story about her mother's impact on her life that has been selected to be published in Chicken Soup for the Mother's Soul 2. Her story highlights the bond of love that connects a mother to her children. Her story, Lessons on Napkins, recounts her mother's words of wisdom, encouragement, and love as she experiences the joys and fears of growing up.

Proceeds from a portion of the sales from Chicken Soup for the Mother's Soul 2 will be donated to The March of Dimes, Children's Relief Network, The House of Umoja, Humanity in Unity, and Homes for Change.


Rachael L. O'Connell has received a two year Army ROTC (Reserve Officer Training Corps) scholarship to attend Virginia Military Institute, Lexington, Virginia. The mission of ROTC is to provide future officers with leadership qualities needed in the Army and reserve components.

The cadet will study military science, management development, and experience adventure training while pursuing a bachelor's degree. The scholarship will pay most of the student's college tuition, on-campus educational fees, and provide a flat-rate for textbooks, supplies, and equipment.

After graduation, the cadet will be required to serve in the military for eight years. The obligation can be fulfilled by serving either on active duty or in the Army National Guard or Reserve.

She is the daughter of Raymond A. O'Connell of South Union Street, Rochester, and Kathie B. Harrington of McKenzie Pond Road, Saranac Lake, New York.

O'Connell is a 1998 graduate of Spencerport High School.


Air National Guard Airman 1st Class Mark P. Messare has graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas.

He is the son of Carol Coy of Beahan Road, Rochester.
