Brockport CSD celebrates Music In Our Schools Month

March marks the national celebration of Music In Our Schools Month. Students at the Barclay Elementary School helped to celebrate this year's theme of "Music ... Pass It On!" through two musical performances: "Open a Book" and "That's What Friends Are For." They performed at their school and at The Landing Nursing Home in Brockport. Concerts this month included one from the high school choruses as well as a district-wide vocal festival at SUNY Brockport.

Music is incorporated into the curriculum at Brockport beginning in kindergarten. The classroom music curriculum is designed not only to teach music skills, but also to coordinate with the language arts, social studies and math curricula at each grade level. Brockport has many different music programs to cater to students' interest. There are special performing groups beginning at the elementary level with the Hill School fourth grade chorus, beginning band and orchestra. At the high school level, students may choose a music sequence, which may include studying and participating in music theory, band, orchestra, chorus, or extra curricular groups such as the Swing Choir, Mad Vocals, Triple Trio, Blue Notes or Jazz Ensemble.

Brockport Central Schools' music staff members are Darla Bair, Liz Banner, Robin Beel, Susan Boring, Katie Burch, Duane Buttermore, Maryellen Giese, Cathy Gurnett, Shawn Halquist, Polly Madsen, Kristen Mahoney, Carol Miller, Pat Morrell, Susan Pritchard, Doug Stevens, Andy Stoker, Greg Turner, and Joanne Zimmerman.
