With the tax rate going down a dollar per thousand of assessed valuation, most Brockport residents didn’t bother to voice any concerns over the tentative 2001-2002 village budget at the April 4 budget hearing. Public comments centered around the cost of the police department, but even those were generally positive in nature. more

DOT prepares for bridge replacements in Parma
Residents and visitors of Parma will have to adjust to a few detours this upcoming construction season as the county will erect new bridges on Peck and Ogden-Parma Town Line roads. more

The Monroe County Environmental Management Council (EMC) is sponsoring an Environmental Photography Competition and Show to portray aspects of the county's natural surroundings. more

Former Agway store to re-open in Hilton
Less than a year after Hilton Agway closed its doors, a new business will be opening in the same Gorton Avenue location. Owners Paul and Sherry Duchyns hope to have their Heartland Farm & Family Center open for business as early as mid-April. more

Gates-Chili Council recognizes community excellence
The Gates-Chili Council of the Greater Rochester Metro Chamber of Commerce will be having their Annual Community Awards Program on April 26. This will be the 16th year that the Council honors local organizations that have significantly impacted the quality of life in the Gates-Chili area for enhancing the environment or otherwise promoting economic development. more

Havenwood residents petition village board
While the plans for a new 65-home mature living sub-development are still in the conceptual design phase, residents of the Havenwood tract have petitioned the Brockport Village Board and the Planning Board to make sure their concerns are addressed before any approvals are given. more

Improvements to Gates-Chili-Ogden Sewer District outlined
Monroe County Executive Jack Doyle has asked the county legislature to amend the 2001-2006 Capital Improvement Program to authorize financing for an increase and improvements of facilities relating to the capital project entitled Gates-Chili-Ogden Sewer District Improvements. more

Special dogs invited to a special camp
On a beautiful summer day last year, in Branchport, near Keuka Lake, Rochester K-9 police Officer David Friedlander and his partner, a five-year old German Shepherd named Duke, gathered in a large circle with several dozen campers on the playing field of Camp Good Days and Special Times, renowned for its special programs for sick children. more

Spencerport trustees adopt 2001-2002 village budget
The Village of Spencerport Board of Trustees unanimously approved the $5.8 million 2001-2002 budget following a public hearing April 4 at which no residents spoke. more

Kendall mom organizes benefit to honor daughter, fight heart disease
A benefit designed to raise funds to battle children's heart disease will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 13 and 14 at K-Mart, 3049 W. Ridge Road, Greece. Pampered Chef's "Cooking from the Heart" cookbooks will be sold and the proceeds will be donated to Children's Hospital at Strong. more

Matela announces candidacy for Brockport mayor
Josephine Matela, of Adams Street, Brockport, has announced her candidacy for mayor in the village election to be held on June 19. Matela and husband, Joseph, have lived at the Adams Street residence for over 17 years and have four grown children and one grandson. Matela is currently employed at Philip Morris, USA where she is a sales manager in the Greater Rochester Area. more

Brockport celebrates music with vocal festival
Brockport's 18th Annual District-Wide Vocal Festival took place March 15 at SUNY Brockport's Tuttle North Gym. The concert showcased the major vocal performing groups of Brockport Central School in celebration of March as "Music in Our Schools" month. more

ExxonMobile grants brings children's author to Hilton School
A $500 ExxonMobile Educational Alliance Foundation grant brought writer Willo Davis Roberts, author of over 90 children's books and a three-time winner of the Edgar Award for Young Readers, to Hilton's Merton Williams Middle School last month. Her novels include: The Girl With the Silver Eyes, Megan's Island, and Kidnappers (Simon and Schuster). more

Hilton Board of Education to fill three seats
Three positions on the seven-member Hilton School District Board of Education are open and part of this year's budget vote and board election May 15. Prospective candidates must complete a nominating petition available at the Board Clerk's office at 225 West Avenue, Hilton. more

Hilton teacher recognized for science teaching
Hilton Village Elementary School fourth grade teacher, Beverly Thompson, a 33-year teaching veteran, has received one of 200 coveted Presidential Awards for Excellence in Teaching Science for 2000 at ceremonies held this month in Washington, D.C. The award is sponsored by National Science Foundation and carries a $7,500 educational grant for her school. more

Holley eighth-graders shadow area businesspeople
Every year, Holley eighth-graders get a "behind the scenes" look at local businesses thanks to a shadowing program that is part of their Home and Careers class. Dr. Barbara Jones, Home and Careers teacher, matches students with area businesses where they spend the morning learning about the business, industry or profession of the employees they are shadowing and may also practice hands-on tasks associated with the jobs. When they return to school, they write thank you notes to their sponsors. more

in Orleans County by Buffalo newspaper
Kendall Central School District has placed first in Orleans County and in the top third of all school districts in an eight-county region based on a ranking by Buffalo Business First newspaper. more

OASIS volunteers help in C-C elementary schools
Marilyn Zingaro may be a retired teacher, but she still spends a lot of her time in education. Zingaro is one of 22 OASIS volunteers helping Churchville-Chili students learn to read better. "I'm glad I retired," says Zingaro, who left her job with the Rochester School District six years ago. "But I missed the kids. I love working one-on-one with a child." more

Two Churchville-Chili students selected for VFW Award
Two C-C students have been selected to receive the Veterans of Foreign Wars Annual High School Merit Awards as part of the VFW and its Ladies Auxiliary's Loyalty Day commemoration. David Johnson and Jessica Dawalt will receive their award at a dinner on Sunday, April 29 at the Mapledale Party House. more

WE-MO-CO Cosmetology student to compete in Korea
Kisha James, a graduate of the Cosmetology program at Monroe 2-Orleans BOCES Career and Technical Education Center (WE-MO-CO), has placed first at the Skills USA/VICA (Vocational and Industrial Clubs of America) International Trials at the Midwest Beauty Show in Chicago and will now go on to compete at the International Competition in Korea this September. more

Hilton-Parma seniors set trip schedule
Each year, several one-day trips to places of interest are offered to senior citizens age 55 and up. These trips are subsidized by the Town of Parma, therefore only Town of Parma residents are eligible for a reduced rate. However, unsubsidized trips are open to everyone. more

Brockport teams earn Scholar/Athlete Award
The Brockport Girls Varsity Winter Track and the Boys Varsity Winter Track teams received the New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) Scholar/Athlete Team Award for the Winter 2000-01 season. more

Creekwood Archery archers compete
Creekwood Archery, located at 451 Lawrence Road, Brockport, sent nine youth and 14 adults to compete in the NYS Indoor Archery Championship at the Rochester Riverside Convention Center. more

Spencerport Girls take second in finals
The Spencerport Soccer Club's Girls’ Under-12 Travel Team took second place following a 4-3 overtime loss in an indoor soccer tournament held at Greece Odyssey. They competed against other travel teams including the Greece Cobras and the Greece Eclipse. more
