Kendall mom organizes benefit
to honor daughter, fight heart disease

A benefit designed to raise funds to battle children's heart disease will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 13 and 14 at K-Mart, 3049 W. Ridge Road, Greece. Pampered Chef's "Cooking from the Heart" cookbooks will be sold and the proceeds will be donated to Children's Hospital at Strong.

Gina Volkmar, of Kendall, is organizing the fundraiser in honor of her daughter. Malory Grace Volkmar was born on May 10, 1997 and was quickly diagnosed with hypoplastic left-heart syndrome. The left side of the baby's heart was underdeveloped and unable to maintain blood flow throughout the body.

"This devastating disease took our daughter's life three days after she was born," Volkmar says. "I thank God for the time we were able to spend with Malory, but it will never be enough, nor will the pain and devastation ever go away. This fundraiser, which we started last year, is just one of the many ways we keep her memory alive."

The Pampered Chef cookbooks - more than 200 pages long - are $10 each. For information, call Gina Volkmar at 659-8240.
