A North Chili man takes two honors
in wood sculpting competition
Clyde Kreckman has a way with wood. Inside his home in North Chili, he spends much of his free time hunched over a small work bench in the corner of his home. With a pair of skillful hands, and a little ingenuity, the 72-year-old man has amassed a proud collection of more than 100 wooden miniature caricatures. more

C-C Board of Ed adopts budget
The Churchville-Chili Board of Education has adopted a proposed budget of $49,009, 605 for the 2001-2002 school year. The tax rate increase is estimated to be 3.88 percent, pending the decisions on education funding in the state budget. In developing the budget, the Board of Education considered input from administrators, faculty, staff and district residents. "This budget supports student learning," says Superintendent Mary Alice Price. "We considered a number of requests and included some in the proposed budget." more

Don't miss Max's Mardi Gras Parade
All residents are invited to the Village of Brockport's "party with a heart." The third annual Max's Mardi Gras Parade and Festival Saturday, April 28, will be a very special occasion for some 40 children with life-threatening illnesses or severe disabilities. But everyone else can enjoy it, too. more

Fire departments receive new tools
The Clifton and Chili Fire Departments recently put two new rescue tools into service. In February 2000, the Clifton and Chili Fire Department's each purchased "jaws of life" independently. more

Greenway Work Day in Chili April 28
Friends of the Genesee Valley Greenway (FOGVG) members and Trail Adopters will be marking Earth Day by working on the Greenway. Many trail adopters have scheduled their spring clean up sessions for the Saturdays around Earth Day, April 21 and April 28. "Our trail adopters are critical to keeping the Greenway in a safe and usable condition. Yet, most people may not realize that last year volunteers devoted more than 1,200 hours to trail work. more

NYS FFA Convention coming to Medina
Over 700 students are expected to convene at Medina High School May 3, 4, and 5 for the 76th Annual New York State FFA Convention. Unique from traditional conventions, the New York State FFA Convention is a student-run event, with a program of activities to be planned and carried out almost completely by a team consisting of 16 state officers and numerous Medina FFA Chapter members. more

Spencerport Board of Education
adopts budget proposal at April 10 meeting
The Spencerport Board of Education has adopted a proposed budget of $48,710,696 for the 2001-2002 school year. In addition to student learning, the budget supports three main areas, according to Superintendent Phillip Langton. "Our goal is to address these three areas and maintain our educational program and help students meet the state learning standards," Langton says. "The proposed budget will support our efforts to increase student achievement." The three areas with the largest increases are: services for students with disabilities; employee benefits, especially health care; and debt service, which voters approved in last year's capital project vote. more

Village of Brockport adopts budget
The Village of Brockport Board of Trustees has adopted its spending plan for 2001-2002. The $4.2 million budget includes a spending increase of $343,000. Applying additional monies from the fund balance to operating expenses means that village property owners will see a property tax rate decrease of one dollar per thousand of assessed valuation. The 2001-2002 tax rate will be $112.78 per thousand of assessed value. more

WEST surveys residents about 531 extension
With the support of SUNY College at Brockport and the Assistance of Ed Lehman (retired SUNY) the West Side Economic Development Council (WEST) conducted a telephone survey of a sample of residents in the 395 and 637 telephone exchanges. The purpose of the survey was to gain information on the concerns and projected impact the planned extension of Route 531 would have on the residents of the Brockport community. more

Hamlin Republicans choose slate
The Hamlin Republican Committee at a special meeting held on April 10, selected their slate of candidates for the November 2001 election. Austin F. Warner, III will be seeking re-election to the position of town supervisor which he has held for one two-year term. Paul S. Rath received the endorsement for another four-year term as councilperson. David G. Rose, who was not seeking re-election as highway superintendent, expressed the desire instead to run for town board and received the committee’s support over incumbent Shirley Hollink. more

Old Fashioned Days comes to Honey Locust Farms
On Sunday, April 29, the hillsides of south Scottsville will be filled with draft horses, oxen, and ponies as the Western New York Draft Horse and Pony Club, Inc. presents its 25th annual Old Fashioned Days at the Honey Locust Farms in Caledonia. Nearly 100 draft animals in teams of two, three, four, five, and six will pull plows and ready fields for planting spring crops, reminiscent of a by-gone era. Demonstrations will begin at 9 a.m. and continue throughout the day. more

Volunteers invited to Christmas on the Canal meeting
A meeting for volunteers for Spencerport's Christmas on the Canal 2001 is scheduled for Tuesday, May 8 at 7 p.m. at the Spencerport Village Office, 27 West Avenue, Spencerport. Anyone interested in helping in any capacity is welcome to attend. more

A team of C-C technology students has returned from Walt Disney World's EPCOT Center in Florida after competing for the national championship at the 2001 FIRST Robotics national competition April 5-7. more

The Hilton School District Office of Staff Development has released the 153-page Classic Fieldbook: Integrating Technology into the Classroom, Third Edition, a compendium of experiences shared by Hilton teachers and their students illustrating “how staff development, technology, curriculum and assessment come together in the classroom to create positive learning experiences.” more

Tait Loe, a five year veteran technology teacher at Hilton High School, received the Western Region Technology Teacher of the Year Award last month at the annual N.Y.S. Technology Education Conference held at the Sagamore Inn in Lake George. more

Hilton Summer Learning Program addresses K-6 academic needs
The Hilton School District is gearing up for the third year of the district's Elementary Summer Learning Program for grades K-6 according to Karen Bolinger, assistant principal at Northwood Elementary School, who will serve as principal this summer for the July 23 - August 17 program. Classes will be held at the Quest Elementary School in the West Avenue Building, 225 West Avenue, from 8:30 a.m. to noon. It is a free of charge to Hilton parents, however, no transportation is provided. more

Hilton teacher recipient of Presidential Award
for
Excellence in Science teaching
Hilton Village Elementary School fourth grade teacher, Beverly Thompson, a 33-year teaching veteran, has received one of 200 coveted Presidential Awards for Excellence in Teaching Science for 2000 at ceremonies held this month in Washington, D.C. The award is sponsored by National Science Foundation and carries a $7,500 educational grant for her school. more

Holley students "spice up" cafeteria walls
At the Holley High School cafeteria, students have more than just good food to whet their appetites. A group of 13 students from Brandy Zavitz's Drawing and Painting class have been working for several weeks on painting a mural for their cafeteria walls. The theme of the mural is, of course, food. more

Kendall teacher receives Clarkson University award
Kendall teacher Jerry Greenlee will receive the Clarkson University Inspirational High School Teaching Award during Clarkson Commencement Weekend, May 12 and 13 in Potsdam. The physics and chemistry teacher was nominated for the award by a former student, Kristin J. Pugh, now an electrical engineering major at Clarkson. more

Three submit petitions to run for Hilton School Board
Three people, two of whom are incumbents, will appear on the ballot May 15 at the Annual Budget Vote and Board Election for three open positions on the seven-member Hilton School District Board of Education. The positions of David Fisher, Dale Beehler and Sue Roethel Gioia will expire this year. more

Blue Devils allow five-run 6th inning
Tied 6-6 after five innings, the Brockport Blue Devils baseball team committed three errors and allowed five runs in the sixth inning in an 11-6 Webster victory April 9. more

Rangers get late offense to win
The Spencerport Rangers scored four runs in their last two plate appearances to defeat Greece Olympia 5-1 April 12 in boys baseball. With Olympia ahead 1-0, Shannon Brinson reached on an infield single in the third inning, took second on an error, third on a fielder's choice and scored on a single to right by Rich Pozzuolo to tie the game. more
