Brockport school spending to rise nearly four percent
The Brockport Central School District will present a budget proposal to residents on May 15 that includes a 3.8 percent increase in spending. The $52.4 million spending package for the school year 2001-2002 is up nearly two million dollars from the actual current budget of $50.5 million. more

Brockport to offer elementary summer school program
Based on the success of the last year's elementary summer school program, the Brockport Board of Education has included the program in the proposed 2001-2002 school budget, which residents will be asked to consider at the May 15 vote. more

C.C.H.S. Spring Concert last for long-time conductor
On Thursday, May 17, the Churchville-Chili Senior High School Choirs will present their annual Spring Concert at 7:30 p.m. in the Senior High School auditorium. The concert will open with "A Tribute to A Chorus Line, the Musical," performed by The "Singing Saints" Show Choir. more

Census changes sales tax receipts allocation
Each year, Monroe County, in accordance with state law, shares sales tax receipts with its towns, villages and school districts based on both full valuation of property and population. The full valuation of property changes each year when local assessors file their roles. The population portion of the formula only changes when census numbers change, usually with the U.S. Census figures that are updated every ten years. more

Girl Scouts honor volunteers from Brockport
The Girl Scouts of Genesee Valley, Inc. honored outstanding volunteers at its Tenth Annual Recognition Gala, "Hats off to Volunteers," on April 26. more

Hamlin family learns to cope with rare illness
A year ago in February, the Barone family of Hamlin was confronted by puzzling, chronic symptoms in their previously healthy three-year-old. Olivia, who is now a four-and-a-half-year-old preschooler, began to experience high fevers, up to 106 degrees, that would last for three weeks. She developed sores in her mouth and on other parts of her body, and rashes on her arms and legs. Dark lines appeared on her ankles and moved up her legs to her torso. Olivia began to complain of pain in her legs and was sometimes unable to walk. more

Hilton takes $45.7 million budget proposal to voters
Residents of the Hilton Central School District will have the chance to cast their ballots May 15 to decide upon next year's spending plan and school board members. more

Local historian feted for years of service
It was 1980 when Eunice Chesnut finished her master's degree in history at SUNY Brockport. She had been volunteering as a guide at the Morgan Manning house and writing the newsletter for the Western Monroe Historical Society for about four years. But in 1980, the society’s board of trustees decided they finally had enough money in their budget to hire an historian. Chesnut was the natural choice. more

MDA adds to Lou Gehrig's disease program
The Muscular Dystrophy Association, the world leader in the fight against amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, is adding several elements to its ALS program during May. more

New business wants to put boaters on the Erie Canal
This summer, Spencerport residents, and village visitors, may be able to enjoy the Erie Canal from a new perspective -- by canoe, kayak or pedal boat -- if the village board approves a proposal by Canalside Rentals to bring its recreational rental business here. more

Oak Orchard to introduce new staff
Oak Orchard Community Health Center will hold an open house from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, May 15 to introduce the community to two new doctors and a nurse midwife that have begun practicing at its Brockport site. The open house will be held at the center, 300 West Avenue, Brockport. Tours and refreshments will be available. more

Spencerport school spending to rise 15 percent
Spencerport school district residents will be asked to support a $48.7 million budget on May 15. The budget calls for a 15 percent increase in spending over the current year budget of $42.4 million. more

This mystery will soon be solved
After a local team achieved national acclaim in the National Multiple Sclerosis Society's (NMSS) annual MSWalk, Walt's Walkers have taken to the tees, fairways and greens with their mission: "Turn MS into Mystery Solved!" more

Annual Armed Forces Day luncheon set
The New York Committee for Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR) and Monroe County Veterans Organizations will sponsor the annual Armed Forces Day Luncheon on May 17. The luncheon will be held in the New York Army National Guard Armory at 250 Weidner Road. more

Chili dedicates new park
Union Station Park at 3720 Union Street, Chili, across from Monroe County's Black Creek Park, will be dedicated May 10 at 1:30 p.m. more

The Clubs Directory for the Monroe County Area is a list of 550 groups and organizations in the Greater Rochester area covering five broad areas of interest: Antiques and Collectibles, Crafts, Fine and Performing Arts, Science and Technology, and Sports and Games. more

Holley area yard sale set for June 2
The Murray Holley Historical Society is sponsoring the second annual community yard sale on Saturday, June 2 in the Village of Holley from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. more

Orleans County Fair Board introduces fair web site
The Orleans County 4-H Fair has a new address. A new web address, that is. Visitors to its new home at www.orleans4-hfair.com will find judging and event schedules, fair history, volunteer opportunities and 4-H program-related information such as finding a club, projects and community service. more

Parma-Hilton Historical Society schedules annual banquet
The Parma-Hilton Historical Society will hold their 32nd annual banquet on Monday, May 21 at Josie's Country JukeBox, 5435 Ridge Road West at 6 p.m. This will be a red, white and blue event at a red, white and blue club, according to a spokesperson for the group. The P-HHS, for many years, held their banquet at the Lutheran Church in Hilton. more

Western Monroe scout leaders honored
At the monthly Roundtable of Northern Lights District Scout Leaders, held at the Spencerport High School on May 2, announcement was made by Awards Committee Chairman Richard Barclay of our 2001 recipients of the District Award of Merit. This award recognizes outstanding leadership of youth in western Monroe County Scouting units. more

Hilton High School Assistant Principal Brian Bartalo coordinated several Honor Roll Breakfasts this month which brought together students earning honor roll status. more

C-C schools host Safe Schools forum May 14
The Churchville-Chili Community Dialogue Committee is providing an opportunity for district residents to learn about Project SAVE, a law recently enacted by New York State addressing safety in all state schools. The Safe Schools Against Violence in Education (SAVE) law is a comprehensive planning effort that addresses prevention, response, and recovery with respect to a variety of emergencies in schools. more

Environmental Fair combines fun with message
Hilton's Quest Elementary School annually holds an Environmental Fair on or around Earth Day where children and parents can participate in numerous games, challenges and courses in ecological and environmental action. more

Hilton High School student world champion in Tae Kwon Do
Fifteen-year-old Alicia Riddle, Hilton High School sophomore, has been training in the Korean martial art Tae Kwon Do since she was seven-years-old, beginning in her native country, Canada. Today she is a second-degree black belt, soon to test for the third degree, and recognized at the international level in her class. Last month she traveled to Columbus, Ohio and went undefeated at the international competition known as the "Arnold Battle of Columbus" - Arnold Schwarzenegger, that is. more

Activities slated for Chili seniors
•Finger Lakes Race Track - trip to Finger Lakes Race Track on Monday, June 11 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Trip includes lunch in the glass enclosed Terrace Dining Room, free admission, race program and tip sheet. Lunch special is ham steak dinner, potato, vegetable, roll and butter, dessert and non-alcoholic beverage. $10 per person. Space limited to 45. Hilton-Parma seniors plan day trip
Plans have been made for the Hilton-Parma Seniors to travel to the Merry-Go-Round Theatre in Auburn, NY on either Wednesday, June 13 or Wednesday, August 22 to see one of two plays. "Forever Plaid" will be seen on June 13 and "Cabaret" on August 22. "Forever Plaid" is the story of a male singing group from the 50s that is miraculously resurrected after an untimely demise, to sing the performance of their lives. "Cabaret" is set in Berlin, just before Hitler's rise to power. The show was made famous by Joel Grey and Liza Minnelli. Both shows feature music and songs and participants have a choice of either trip. more

Local girl recognized at WHAM Sportswomen Luncheon
Jenna Simonetti, a sixth-grade student at Terry Taylor Elementary School in Spencerport, was honored at the 23rd Annual WHAM Sportswomen of the Year Awards luncheon on April 30. A check in the amount of $1,000 was presented in her name to the Children's Hospital at Strong for the hospital's Pediatric Pulmonary Cystic Fibrosis Clinic. more

Spencerport football camp scheduled
Tony Lipani's 2001 "Inspire" Football Camp will be held on July 9-13 at Spencerport High School. The camp will consist of two separate sessions. more
