John L. O'Connor, Sr., instrument maker

John L. O'Connor, Sr., 76 of North Bergen, well known instrument maker and piano technician, died at Strong Memorial Hospital, Rochester, Friday, April 27, 2001.

He served in World War II and the Korean War, retired as acting lieutenant of the Batavia City Police Department and he retired as director of the Keyboard Institute at SUNY Brockport in 1983.

Mr. O'Connor was the owner of the Bergen Piano and Harpsichord Shop in North Bergen and was the inventor of the Neo-classic Fortepiano which he built with the assistance of his two sons. In 1973, he received a Master Craftsman Fellowship award from the National Endowment of the Arts for the prototype which was used by famous artists including Rudolph and Peter Serkin.

He played several charity benefit concerts on both harpsichord and piano and for many years was organist at Batavia Lodge No. 475 F.&A.M.

Surviving are his wife, Norma Williams O'Connor; two sons, John L. (Cynthia) O'Connor Jr. of Brockport and David M. O'Connor, Sr. of Byron; five grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Kaye Gill of Brockport and Mrs. DeEtte Chamberlain of Belfast, New York; a nephew and two nieces.

A Memorial Service will be held at St. James Episcopal Church, 405 East Main Street, Batavia at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, May 19. Memorials may be made to St. James Church or Hospice Family Care, 550 East Main Street, Batavia, New York 14020 in his memory.

•Benner, Mary K. (Schickler), On April 27, 2001. Predeceased by her sister-in-law, Marilyn Schickler; and nephew, Thomas Schickler. Survived by three children, Debra Sprague, Barbara Benner and Charles Benner; nine grandchildren; nine brothers and sisters, Charles (Rose Marie), Eugene (Therese), Doris (Donald) Kepler, Robert (Marilyn), Edward, Myrtle (Francois) Peter, John (Peggy), Alice (Hatin) Doctor, Paula (Stan) Rudger. She was a graduate of Nazareth Academy and St. James School of Nursing. She was a registered nurse and a member of the Chamber of Commerce.

A Funeral Mass was said May 1 at Church of the Good Shepherd, 3318 E. Henrietta Road. Interment, Holy Ghost Cemetery. Contributions can be made to the Church of The Good Shepherd, or Lakeside Memorial Hospital, 156 West Avenue, Brockport 14420.


•Corke, William F. (Corky), April 30, 2001 at age 77. Predeceased by his wife, Mary D. Corke. Survived by sons, Michael (Elizabeth) and Kevin (Karen); grandchildren, Richard, Mark, Lisa, Jason and Matthew; sister, Elizabeth (Henry) Hendricks; brother, David (Loraine); sister-in-law, Betty; nieces and nephews. He was a graduate of Spencerport High School, class of '42, a veteran of WWII (USMC-Pacific) and an Eastman Kodak Company retiree.

Interment May 3 in Holy Ghost Cemetery. Donations can be made in his name to the Spencerport Sports Booster Club, Box 26, Spencerport, 14559.


•Reisinger, Ralph, On April 25, 2001, at age 44. Survived by his wife, the former Dawn Spitz; two sons, A.J. Reisinger of Sparta and Jake (Amy Neumeier) Reisinger of Rochester; his mother, Lorraine Reisinger of Spencerport; a brother, Paul (Laura) Reisinger also of Spencerport; two sisters, Donna (Don) Krenzer of LeRoy and Janet (Dirk) Pasterkamp of Englewood, Colorado; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services were held April 30 in Union Cemetery, Scottsburg. Contributions can be made to a charity of choice pertaining to Ralph's interest in hunting and fishing.

•Ey, Betty, Sunday, April 29, 2001. Predeceased by her parents, Grace and William Lincoln; and her husband, Raymond; beloved mother of Gary Ey, Barbara (Gary) Boyce and William Ey; grandmother to Sara, Shawn, Hanna and Stephanie; favorite aunt to many. Friend to all she walked with.

•Hesbon, Eugene F., April 26, 2001 at the age of 90. Predeceased by his beloved wife, Adelyn. He is survived by his brother, Gerald (Mary) Hesbon; sister, Marjory Newell; brother-in-law, Edward (Kathryn) Paduano; nieces, nephews and cousins.

•Talarowski, M. Elizabeth, On April 24, 2001 at the age of 69. Predeceased by her daughter, Stephanie Talarowski and her husband, Joseph W. Talarowski. She is survived by her children, Anne (Robert) Maier, Joseph Talarowski and Ellen Parry; three grandchildren; brother, J. Thomas Brown; several nieces and nephews.
