C. Dennis Beaver of Rochester was appointed vice president/commercial loan officer at the Bank of Castile, said Brenda L. Copeland, president and CEO.

Beaver, who has more than 20 years of banking experience, will serve businesses in the Monroe County market to meet the expanded demand for financial services from business customers, Copeland said. His office will be at the Bank of Castile's Chili office, 3252 Chili Avenue, which opened last year.

He holds a master's degree from SUNY Brockport and has two children, Christopher and Jennifer.


Jason Powarzynski of Vroom Road, Spencerport has graduated from Rochester Institute of Technology with a bachelor's degree in illustration. Powarzynski studied in RIT's School of Fine Arts, College of Imaging Arts & Sciences.

He is the son of Frances and John Powarzynski of Spencerport and a 1989 graduate of Churchville-Chili High School.


Kristy M. Urban of Bergen was honored recently at SUNY Oswego's Honors Convocation. She received the Outstanding Finance Student Award.

Urban, a senior studying finance at Oswego, is the daughter of Donald and Debra Urban of Townline Road in Bergen.

The formal ceremony, complete with a procession of selected faculty and college officers in full academic regalia, is sponsored each spring at Oswego by Vega, the undergraduate women's honor society.


Terrence M. Hooper has been named director of human resources at SUNY Brockport effective April 30. Hooper comes to SUNY Brockport from the City of Elmira, where he was its director of personnel for the last four years. Previous to that position, he was manager of employment and benefits for the City of Rochester for six years and manager of benefits and personnel systems for nine, also for the City. A graduate of SUNY Brockport with a BS in history/political science with an MS in comparative government from the London (England) School of Economics and Political Science, Hooper in his role as director of human resources, fills the position previously held by Richard Meade.


Arthur S. Rohe, of Brockport, who teaches U.S. history and government at Byron-Bergen High School, received one of this year's awards for excellence in secondary school teaching from the Margaret Warner Graduate School of Education and Human Development at the University of Rochester.

Sixty-eight secondary school teachers from across Western New York were honored for their work on April 26 at the annual recognition dinner and ceremony at the Memorial Art Gallery.

Stephanie S. Rath, daughter of Dale E. and M. Ruth Rath of Brockport, has been accepted at the Harvard Business School and the Kellogg Business School at Northwestern University for the fall semester to study for a Master of Business Administration degree. Rath was the valedictorian of Brockport High's class of 1992, and a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Yale University in 1996. She is currently a brand manager for Quaker Oats Company at their headquarters in Chicago, Illinois.


Jeffrey S. Bird, of Holley, has received the Rochester Art Club Award for excellence in painting for his oil on canvas piece, "Seven Stones of Manhood." Bird received an MA in painting and drawing from SUNY Oswego and an MFA in painting from UMass-Amherst. His work has been featured most recently at Tower Fine Arts Gallery in Brockport, High Falls Gallery in Rochester, Schweinfurth Art Center in Auburn, WORKS/San Jose in California and the Artemesia Gallery in Chicago, where he had a solo show. Bird currently serves as assistant professor of painting at SUNY Brockport.


Marianne M. Virgilio, CFRE, has been named director of development at SUNY Brockport. Virgilio comes to SUNY Brockport from the Rochester Institute of Technology, where she was the director of development in the College of Science and, prior to that, RIT's College of Engineering.

Virgilio brings to SUNY Brockport 25 years of experience in the field of fund raising, including areas such as fund raising to support scholarship, annual gifts planning and implementation, donor stewardship, alumni relations, communications, and marketing with non-profit institutions in health care, social services and higher education. Prior to her six years at RIT, she was director of development from 1992 to 1995 at Cancer Action, Inc. and the organization's director of public relations and marketing from 1991-1992. She also has worked as the development coordinator for the Family Resource Center on Webster Avenue and as director of development and director of community relations at St. Joseph's Villa of Rochester. She was, from 1978 to 1981, SUNY Brockport's director of alumni relations and executive director of the Brockport College Foundation from 1981-1983.


BMC (Seal) Dan Haymon has retired from the Navy after 20 years of service. The ceremony took place on May 4 in Virginia Beach by invitation of the commander of the Naval Special Warfare Group Two. Haymon is the son of Henry and Muriel Haymon of Bergen.


Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class Aaron M. Anderson, son of Cynthia L. and Mark L. Anderson of Sautell Road, Bergen, is halfway through a six-month deployment to the Mediterranean Sea and Arabian Gulf while assigned to the amphibious assault ship USS Nassau, home ported in Norfolk, Virginia.

During the deployment, Anderson's ship participated in "Spanish Phiblex," an exercise consisting of a series of amphibious landings with Spanish naval forces. USS Nassau also participated in a live-fire training exercise in Capo Teulada, Sardinia.

Additionally, Anderson's shop visited cities in Italy, Malta and Spain, where he had the opportunity to shop, sightsee and enjoy the local culture and cuisine.

Anderson is a 1998 graduate of Byron-Bergen High School of Bergen, and joined the Navy in August 1998.


Air Force Airman Darius W. Brown has graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. During the six weeks of training, the airman studied the Air Force mission, organization, and customs and received special training in human relations. He is the son of Samuel Brown of Rochester and a 1999 graduate of Churchville-Chili Senior High School.


Air Force Airman 1st Class Daniel J. Cellura has graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. During the six weeks of training, the airman studied the Air Force mission, organization, and customs and received special training in human relations. He is the son of Mary Anne Cellura and Daniel Cellura, both of Rochester, and received an associate degree in 2000 from Monroe Community College.


Air Force Airman Michelle E. Spychalski has graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. During the six weeks of training, the airman studied the Air Force mission, organization, and customs and received special training in human relations. She is the daughter of Mark and Robin Spychalski of Holley and a 2000 graduate of Holley High School.


Air National Guard Airman 1st Class Kenneth Bedrin has graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. During the six weeks of training, the airman studied the Air Force mission, organization, and customs and received special training in human relations. He is the son of John Bedrin of Holley and Dorothy Davis of Brockport. Bedrin is a 1995 graduate of Hilton Central High School.


Charles E. Heinkel has joined the United States Army under the Delayed Entry Program. The program gives young men and women the opportunity to delay entering active duty for up to one year. Heinkel, a 1999 graduate of Greece Athena High School, will report to Fort Jackson, Columbia, South Carolina, for basic training. He is the son of Beverly L. Soanes of Kendall and Charles E. Heinkel of Rochester.


Dominic A. Sumner has joined the United States Army under the Delayed Entry Program. The program gives young men and women the opportunity to delay entering active duty for up to one year. Sumner, a 1997 graduate of Gates Chili High School will report to Fort Benning, Columbus, Georgia, for basic training. He is the son of Deborah A. and Frank A. Sumner of Rochester.
