Ag Awareness Committee seeks volunteers

The Orleans County 4-H Fair, a member of the New York State Association of Agricultural Fairs, has been chosen to participate in a state-wide program designed to bring current and emerging agricultural practices and technologies to the attention of the public. The county was one of 13 chosen out of 56 who applied. A cash prize will be awarded to the fair that best educates its patrons through the use of exhibits, publications, signage, etc. A smaller cash prize is awarded to those fairs who enter the program entitled "Agriculture in the New Millennium."

The committee that will be coordinating this effort needs help. The county's plan for its Agricultural Awareness efforts must be submitted by May 30. Volunteers are needed to brainstorm ideas, develop exhibits and other materials, and to involve the community at large. Some examples of topics that might be included in this effort are Global Satellite Positioning, Integrated Pest Management, Organic Practices, Improving Our Soil, Water Conservation, Genetic Engineering, Historic Agricultural Practices or Manure Management.

Already, many individual 4-H Clubs, with the help of their leaders, plan to present clinics and exhibits at the fair that will help people learn more about current and emerging agricultural practices. An "Ag Trail," similar to a treasure hunt, will span the length of the fairgrounds, and the Kids Ag Tent will house many hands-on activities. Children will be able to dig potatoes and carrots, pick an apple from an apple tree or find an egg in the hen house. Check the 4-H Fair Web Site, www.orleans4-hfair.com for further information.
