Churchville Lions gift library with Braille system

The Newman Riga Library has received a donation from the Churchville Lions Club in the form of computer software. Ed-It PC is a direct-entry Braille system for the Braillist. It can do literary formats, textbooks and more. After entry of data onto floppy disks, the disks can then be run through an embosser to generate "print" copy. Such technology eliminates the need for huge amounts of space to store multiple volumes of paper.

Loaded on a freestanding computer, patrons will be able to access this software as they are able to access the word processing package.

Many of the volunteer transcribers in the area have been using manual Braillers over the years and transition to the computerized version is both expensive and time-consuming. The availability of such software locally allows transcribers to complete some work at the library as well as view the possibilities that exist in computer software purchases. Fundamentally, Ed-It PC provides a public service for a small but valuable segment of the local population of which few people are even aware.

Nancy Neidrauer, Lions member, has high praise for the volunteer Braillers in the community who generate Braille formats for novels, and even do customized projects like menus, church bulletins, auto manuals and more.

The Churchville Lions Club has provided a myriad of gifts over the years for the Newman Riga Library and remains one of the most active benefactors of the Churchville community.
