The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC), with the concurrence of the New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH), has selected a remedy for the Trimmer Road Landfill Site. Following a February 26 public meeting, a final selection of a remedial plan was chosen - Alternative 3 from the Proposed Remedial Action Plan. more

Etolian Masonic Lodge to install officers
The public is invited to the installation of officers of Etolian Lodge No. 479 on Sunday, June 3. Ceremonies begin at 2 p.m. in the lodge rooms on the second floor of the Masonic Temple, 133 South Union Street, Spencerport. Refreshments will follow and be served in the adjacent dining hall. There is chair lift access for those who may have difficulty with stairs. Dress is casual. more

Zimmer reinstated, to retire June 17
In an agreement reached late on May 16, Brockport Police Chief Gary Zimmer has been reinstated as chief pending his retirement on June 17. Zimmer had been on a paid adminstrative leave since February when an investigation into allegations made against the police department was commenced under the direction of the Monroe County Sheriff’s Department. The sheriff’s investigation determined that allegations of a criminal nature were unfounded, but revealed numerous procedural and administrative errors. more

Brockport school budget passes
Brockport Central School District voters approved a $52.4 million school budget on May 15 by a vote of 1,212 to 626. The budget increased spending by about four percent over the current year budget. Voters also approved the purchase of school buses at a cost of $875,000. more

Brockport's election slate set
Eight candidates are seeking a spot on the Brockport Village Board in elections to be held June 19. Vying for the mayor's seat are incumbent Mary Ann Thorpe, Centennial Drive, and Josephine Matela, Adams Street. more

Byron-Bergen voters approve three percent increase
Byron-Bergen Central School District voters approved a $14.9 million budget on May 15 by a vote of 342 to 165. Voters also approved a $160,000 bus purchase by a vote of 349 to 159. more

Churchville-Chili residents approve budget
Churchville-Chili residents voted in favor of the district's $49,009,605 budget by a nearly two-to-one margin on May 15. The vote tally was 761 in favor, 395 against. more

Churchville Fire Department memorial dedicated May 28
The Churchville Volunteer Fire Department will be dedicating a memorial marker and flag pole on the east side of their property on Monday, May 28. more

Community seeks volunteers for Phase II at Brockport playground
Last July, volunteers from Brockport and neighboring areas built the first phase of a playground at the corner of Utica and Holley Streets. For the past year, children have been enjoying this playground, which is handicapped-accessible, by climbing to the small tower, accepting the disc challenge, and riding the stationery cycler. They have been playing on the swings, the roller slide, and the spring rider, and have spent countless hours exploring the play panels. Phase I was designed mainly to meet the play needs of the smaller children. more

Hilton School District $45 million budget passes
The Hilton School District Budget Vote was passed by residents May 15 1,157 to 552, a 44 percent voter turnout increase over last year, according to district officials. more

Holley voters ratify school budget, elect board members
By a narrow seven vote margin, voters in the Holley Central School district ratified the 2001-2002 budget. Residents approved the $14,551,780 budget with 372 voting "yes" on the spending plan while 365 voted "no." more

Kendall voters approve school spending plan; elect board member
Voters in the Kendall Central School District came out in near record numbers to support the district's $12,464,258 spending plan for 2001-2002. By a margin of 122 votes, residents ratified the budget by casting 393 yes votes and 271 no votes on the proposal. more

Parma Memorial Day observance May 28
The Parma Memorial Day Parade programs, sponsored by the Hilton American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars, will be held Monday, May 28. more

Project SAVE safety plan presented in Spencerport
Spencerport School District residents are invited to attend an informational meeting about Project SAVE, a new law intended to ensure safety in the state's schools. Project SAVE (Safe Schools Against Violence in Education) is a law requiring all school boards in the state to adopt a comprehensive school safety plan for the district and each individual building within the district. The charge also included addressing the district's code of conduct to help ensure a safe school culture. more

American Legion Sheret Post #35 starts its Memorial Day weekend celebration with a Service of Remembrance on Sunday, May 27, at 11 a.m. in the Gaines Congregational Church. more

Trimmer Road bridge to close
The Trimmer Road bridge over the Erie Canal in Spencerport will be closed to all traffic on approximately May 29 until July 6 according to Troy Long of Crane Hogan, project superintendent. more

Unusable flags collected for disposal
The members of The American Legion Hiscock-Fishbaugh Post 788 will collect unserviceable American flags at the Hilton Big M on May 25 and 26. Any torn or dirty American flags may be dropped off then. more

Churchville-Chili students walk for Camp Good Days
Churchville-Chili students have raised nearly $4,000 for Camp Good Days and Special Times. Two physical education teachers at Fairbanks Road Elementary School, David Cassidy and Paul Dick, organized a "Walk for Camp Good Days," challenging their students to get sponsors. Then, students walked around the campus during their physical education classes the week of May 7. more

GCC offers summer courses in Albion
Space is still available in summer academic courses offered at Genesee Community College's Orleans Campus Center, 456 West Avenue, Albion. more

Ginther Elementary School students board a new bus
Kindergarteners and first-graders at the Brockport Ginther School boarded their "school bus" serving line on April 25. The new serving line, actually constructed to look like a school bus, is yellow with Brockport written in black lettering across the top, and is complete with flashing lights and wheels. more

Hilton appoints new principal for the Quest Elementary School
Lydia McCabe, currently principal of Greece Central School District's Parkland-Brookside Elementary School (two schools Pre-K-2 and 3-5) was appointed to the principalship of the Quest Elementary School by the Hilton Board of Education May 8. McCabe will assume the position July 1, 2001 following the retirement of Anita Clark, Quest's principal. more

Hilton Board of Ed to hold proposed Code of Conduct public hearing
The Hilton School District Board of Education will hold a public hearing on Tuesday, May 22, on the proposed Code of Conduct required by N.Y.S. Education Law. The N.Y.S. Education Department is providing guidelines for school districts to implement Project SAVE - Safe Schools Against Violence in Education. more

Host families sought for summer exchange students
Hilton Teacher Nichole LiVecchi is the contact for the NACEL Open Door Program which is currently looking for ten families to host students from Spain or France for three-and-a-half weeks this summer. more

Spencerport Central Schools to conduct annual census
The Spencerport Central School District will conduct its annual census of all children residing within the four towns of the school district during the month of June. The law requires that a census be maintained for children from birth through age eighteen, and through age twenty-one for children with disabilities. Forms will be distributed at the end of May. more

Spencerport students read 472,515 minutes for 'Reading Books Brigade'
Spencerport elementary school students read a total of 472,515 minutes as part of a joint effort between the school district and the Rochester Brigade football team to promote reading. During the month of April, students in fourth, fifth- and sixth-grades took on a reading challenge. They kept track of how many minutes they read at home each night, with parents verifying the amounts. Winning students received tickets to a Brigade game. more

Blue Devils hang on for win
The Brockport Blue Devils scored all four of their runs in the fourth inning and hung on for a 4-3 victory over Rush-Henrietta May 9. more

Bright Raven competes in state meet
Bright Raven Gymnastics of Gates played host to the USA Gymnastics Level 6 State Championships May 11-12. Two hundred twenty-seven gymnasts represented 50 teams with Bright Raven taking the fourth place banner scoring 180.875. Many of Bright Raven's team members also earned individual awards. more

Judo championship held in Brockport
The eighth annual Renshinkan Judo Dojo Championships were held on May 5 at SUNY Brockport. Conducted under the direction of Dr. Sachio Ashida, the tournament brought together judo enthusiasts from Western New York to Maryland. more

Kendall squeaks by Holley
Kendall's Ryan Gouchet defeated Holley's Bryan Beckingham 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 in second singles to break a two-all tie and give the Eagles a 3-2 win May 10 in boy's tennis. more

Letchworth hosts fishing picnic
On Saturday, May 26, the "Learn to Catch a Fish Family Picnic" will be held at Trailside Lodge at Letchworth State Park from noon to 6 p.m. This carnival style event will feature games, activities, educational workshops, nature walks, free fishing (no license required), free lunch and door prizes. The program mixes fun and recreation with learning experiences in aquatic biology and ecology. more

Rangers beat Saints on the road
Spencerport's girls softball team improved their record to 13-4 with a 3-2 win in Churchville-Chili May 14 to begin the final week of the regular season. more

Roberts Wesleyan College expands Summer Sports Camp programs
The Roberts Wesleyan Soccer Camp program has added five new summer camps: Boy's and Girl's Lacrosse camp, Pick 6 All-Sports camp, Junior Basketball camp, and a soccer shooting and goaltending mini-camp. more

Saints beat Sutherland
Churchville-Chili took a 4-0 lead in the first inning and never looked back on their way to a 6-3 victory over Pittsford-Sutherland May 14. more

SUNY Brockport Softball finishes record breaking season at 30-15
The SUNY College at Brockport softball team completed its record-breaking season reaching the North Region Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III Softball Championships before losing to Springfield, 4-1. The Golden Eagles finished the year with a school-record 30 wins (30-15), shattering the previous mark of 25 wins which was set during the 1997 season when Brockport advanced to the NCAA East Regionals and finished third (25-9). more
