Sheret Post #35 marks Memorial Day

American Legion Sheret Post #35 starts its Memorial Day weekend celebration with a Service of Remembrance on Sunday, May 27, at 11 a.m. in the Gaines Congregational Church.

The Gaines Church is located on Route 104 east of Route 279 in Albion, New York (19019 Ridge Road).

Pastor Richard L. Eilers, a retired United States Army Chaplain, will preach a sermon on the meaning of heroism, titled "The Boy Who Got Drafted." He will be joined by the American Legion Honor Color Guard, the men and women of the Sheret Post and The Vietnam Veterans of America.

Sheret Post #35 was founded on September 4, 1919, five months after the birth of the American Legion in Paris, France; and is the oldest American Legion Post in western New York.

The Post is named in honor of brothers Egbert and James Sheret who were killed in action in France on September 23, 1918.

The community is invited to attend this special service honoring local men and women who served in the Armed Forces of the United States.
