The Hilton School District Board of Education will hold a public hearing on Tuesday, May 22, on the proposed Code of Conduct required by N.Y.S. Education Law. The N.Y.S. Education Department is providing guidelines for school districts to implement Project SAVE - Safe Schools Against Violence in Education.

Major components of SAVE are the development of school safety plans by each school district and at each building level in the state as well as writing a code of conduct which defines student rights and responsibilities; the roles of essential partners: parents, teachers, guidance counselors, administrators; a student dress code; prohibited student conduct; how to report violations of the code of conduct; disciplinary procedures and penalties; alternative instruction; discipline of students with disabilities; referral to law enforcement and judicial authorities; corporal punishment; student searches/interrogations; visitors to schools; and public conduct on school property.

The hearing will be held at 7 p.m. at the Quest/West Avenue building. The Board of Education is expected to take action on the code of conduct at its June 26 meeting. For more information, call Assistant Superintendent for Business Steven Ayers at 392-1000 ext. 7033.
