Relay for Life takes place June 8 and 9

Spencerport couple competes for team members

Randy and Kim Hunter are heading up different teams at Spencerport’s second annual Relay for Life on June 8 and 9. But that’s okay - the married couple has a friendly competition to see who can enlist the most team members to raise money for the American Cancer Society.

Randy was diagnosed with bladder cancer last October. After intensive treatment during the fall, he was able to return to work at Eastman Kodak in January. Kim is a teacher at the Bernabi School where the couple’s daughter is a student. They also have twin sons who are tenth graders at E.J. Wilson High School, Spencerport.

Like many people, the Hunters weren’t very aware of the American Cancer Society’s efforts until cancer struck in their home. They decided the Relay for Life was a way they could help the fight against the disease locally. Randy’s team, which he has named "Hunters for a Cure," has 28 members; Kim’s team, 31 members.

Relay for Life begins at 6 p.m. Friday night at the Spencerport High School athletic field. It is a marathon. Teams must keep at least one member moving on the field until 10 a.m. Saturday morning. Some teams will run the track the whole night, others will walk. Registered teams include a couple of area running clubs and students from the high school.

Highlights of the evening are the Survivor’s Lap at 7 p.m., and the Luminaria Ceremony at 10 p.m. The second ceremony honors both those who have won and those who have lost the battle with cancer. The public is welcome to attend the event.

Team members are encouraged to raise at least $100 each in pledges. For information about the Relay for Life, call 1-800-ACS-2345.
