Bergen Presbyterians to travel to Albania
The Evangelical Alliance, and local churches in Tirana Albania have invited Bergen First Presbyterian Church to participate in the "Tenth Anniversary of the Reopening of Albania to Religious Freedom Celebration." Bergen First Presbyterian Church is one of the 73 churches that are part of the Presbytery of Genesee Valley and the only Presbyterian Church (USA) church to partake in this celebration. more

Bienvenida welcomes migrant farm workers
Brockport's annual Bienvenida, or welcome, celebration for hundreds of migrant farm workers who have arrived to start the farming season will be held Sunday, June 24. more

Churchville considers hiring security
Hiring off-duty police officers to protect the Village of Churchville against vandalism could cost thousands of dollars each month, but Churchville Mayor Donald R. Ehrmentraut told village trustees it would be money well-spent. more

Clarendon kids race to the finish line
The Town of Clarendon's 2nd annual Soapbox Car Race was held June 2 on the South Manning Road hill. Families and children designed and built the cars, then spent the day together racing. more

Deer take up residence at Seymour Library
The newest residents of the Seymour Library aren’t bound in volumes or arranged alphabetically. Instead, they stand proudly or humbly, serenely or boldly on shelves throughout the library. Forty deer sculptures have been brought to life through the creative use of materials and methods by Seymour patrons. more

First Walkabout planned for Churchville
Residents are invited to get to know local businesses (and take home some freebies) during the first annual Village of Churchville "Walkabout," Thursday, June 14 from 5 to 9 p.m. Businesses will be open late that night offering discounts, tours, free samples and coupons. more

Hamlin's King of the Carnival
Larry Merritt will turn 79 years old at the end of June. Hamlin has been home all his life, the last 50 plus years of it with his wife, Addie. Friends would say he is a quiet, reserved gentleman. more

Labor Department reviews youth workplace rules
The New York State Department of Labor reminds parents, minors and businesses of the laws governing youth in the workplace. New Yorkers must be aware of the number of hours youth are allowed to work, prohibited occupations and the required working papers before accepting a job. more

Parma receives $252,000 grant to expand park
As the saying goes, "The third time is the charm." And Parma officials would agree. After three applications for grant money, the Town of Parma recently received word that it will receive $252,250 from the Clean Water, Clean Air Bond Act and Environmental Protection Fund to expand the town park. The town is the largest recipient out of the 16 projects located in 11 counties in Western New York that also received funding. more

Two Hilton girls follow their dream
It started in the spring of 1983 when Megan Elizabeth Schneider and Emilie Nadine Willison were born. Megan was born on March 25 and Emilie on April 7. The two girls have been friends from the beginning. more

Brockport challengers won't attend candidates' forum
A meet-the-candidates night, moderated by the League of Women Voters, won't be attended by any of the challengers in the Village of Brockport's upcoming election. more

Chili to dedicate new playground equipment
The public is invited to attend the Town of Chili and Lions Club ribbon cutting ceremony for the new playground equipment in Davis Park on June 13 at 6:30 p.m. The new playground equip-ment is a joint venture between the Town of Chili and the Lions Club and is the second part of a five-year replacement pro-gram for playground equipment in all Town Parks. Last year the equipment in Hubbard Park was replaced. more

Cobblestone Society receives bequest
Mary Anne Braunbach, president of the Cobblestone Society, Childs, has announced that the Cobblestone Society is the recipient of a substantial bequest from the estate of Abigail Van Wagenen, a former member of the society. more

First annual LilyFest comes to Bergen
Bergen Water Gardens will hold its first annual LilyFest June 22 to 24. Admission is free to the event that celebrates the joy of water gardening. more

Food Shelf seeks new director
The Brockport Ecumenical Food Shelf is seeking a new director to replace Mary Ellen Baker, who is stepping down after 10 years service. The food shelf is a joint service venture of all Brockport area churches. more

Merchants plan annual sidewalk sale
Plans are shaping up for the Brockport Merchants Association Annual Sidewalk Sale, July 12-14. The sale will feature the Brockport business, professional and service community. There will be bargains, and a wide variety of food provided by local businesses and demonstrations. more

Spencerport bridges close
The Trimmer Road Bridge over the Erie Canal in Spencerport closed on Monday, June 4 for approximately seven weeks. The canal path will not be effected and will remain open to pedestrians. Construction crews will be repairing the guide rail and making concrete repairs. There is not a posted detour. The next nearest crossing is Union Street to the east. more

Summer Serenades returns on Thursdays
In its ninth year, Summer Serenades is again returning to Sagawa Park, Main Street, Brockport on Thursdays from 7 to 9 p.m. starting June 21. The series is free and open to the public. more

Wheel Fest Cruise In 2001 bigger and better
The 2001 Hamlin Wheel Fest Cruise In had another record year for attendance. A 22 percent increase brought the number of registered vehicles to 74. There were also displays of vintage bicycles, pedal cars, fire trucks and equipment, hit and miss engines, a new car corral, vintage police car, the Travelers Catastrophic Claims Van (Cat Van) sponsored by Shephard-Maxwell-Hale Insurance office, and more. more

Brockport sets public hearing on Code of Conduct
Brockport Central Schools will hold a public hearing during its regularly scheduled board of education meeting on Tuesday, June 19, from 7:20 to 8:20 p.m. at the administration building, 40 Allen Street. The purpose of the meeting is to present the draft Code of Conduct to the board and the public before the board acts to adopt the Code. The Code of Conduct was developed in accordance with the regulations of the Commissioner of Education. more

C-C student wins Gold Key Award
Churchville-Chili Junior High School student Lanh Nguyen has her artwork on exhibit at Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., after winning a Gold Key for her oil pastel portrait of her friend, Christina Kok, in the Finger Lakes Region Scholastic Art Show. more

Churchville-Chili plans Goodling celebration
After 28 years as vocal music director at the Churchville-Chili Senior High School, Rob Goodling will retire at the end of the school year. At his final concert at the high school on Thursday, May 17, former members of Goodling's choruses joined their voices in singing The Battle Hymn of the Republic, complete with instrumental accompaniment. more

Holley accepting enrollment for new pre-kindergarten program
Holley Elementary School is now accepting enrollment for its new Pre-Kindergarten Program, which will begin this September. There will be two sessions with a maximum of 15 students each. Both sessions are two-and-a-half hours long, five days a week and will follow the school district calendar. There is no fee for this program. more

Students learn lifesaving techniques
Safety is part of the curriculum in Laurie Pierce's Early Childhood Development class at WE-MO-CO Career and Technical Education Center. Students in Pierce's class recently learned infant/child and adult CPR. It is these life-saving techniques that Pierce hopes will carry through if students are faced with an emergency situation. more

Work begins on new transportation facility
The Churchville-Chili School District held a groundbreaking ceremony as work begins on the new transportation facility. The transportation facility will be built on the former Pengelly sheep farm on the corner of Westside Drive and Fairbanks Road. more

Hilton-Parma seniors plan day trip
The Hilton-Parma Senior Citizens have scheduled an upcoming trip to Ft. Erie Race Track and Casino in Ft. Erie, Ontario, Canada on Wednesday, July 18. Included in this trip is Clubhouse admission, racing program, buffet luncheon in the Prince of Wales Dining Room overlooking the thoroughbred track, $10 casino coin bonus, $5 casino food voucher, and motorcoach transportation. more


In Sports:

Brockport schedules basketball camp
A basketball camp will be held at the Brockport Middle School Gym, July 9-13, for grades three through 12. Brockport Boys Varsity Basketball Coach Charles Hage and Program Assistant Jack Hogan will be co-directors. The camp will feature a teaching staff of 20+ coaches to work with the players. In the past, the camp has featured guest speakers Pearl Washington and Mike Hopkins. They have also had local stars Roosevelt Bouie and John Wallace lecture. more

Hilton announces diamond skills winners
As many as 20 participants competed in the Diamond Skills Competition hosted by Hilton-Parma Recreation on June 2 at Parma Town Hall. These participants won first place honors in their respective age groups. more

Spencerport athletes perform community service
This spring, the Rangers varsity athletic teams have performed a variety of volunteer projects: the baseball team worked at the American Red Cross Blood Drive; the softball team donated $200 from a Cider Sale to the American Cancer Society; the golf team donated $50 from a bottle drive to the Wedgewood Nursing Home; the boys tennis team collected clothing for the Open Door Mission; the boys track and field team volunteered at the American Heart Walk and assisted at the Antique Toy Sale sponsored by the Spencerport Booster Club; the girls track and field team participated in the American Heart Walk and assisted at the Rotary Ziti Dinner. more

Spencerport teams qualify for scholar awards
Four of six Spencerport spring athletic teams qualified for the NYSPHSAA Team Scholar Athlete Award during the spring 2000-01 season. In order to qualify, a team must have a team grade point average of 90 percent or above. more

Spencerport women alumni soccer players wanted
The Spencerport Soccer Club is inviting all interested former Spencerport High School Girls' Varsity soccer players to play in the Inaugural Women's Alumni Game. The game will be held on Spencerport's Varsity Field at 7 p.m. on Saturday, June 23. more
