Carillon summer recital series begins July 9 at UR

Two carillonneurs from Yale University will inaugurate this year's Hopeman Memorial Carillon Summer Recital Series at the University of Rochester.

Ellen Espenschied, director of the Yale Freshman Chorus, and Roy Lee, who recently received his bachelor's degree in history from Yale College, will perform the free concert beginning at 7 p.m. Monday, July 9, on the Eastman Quadrangle on the River Campus.

Espenschied received both her bachelor's and master's degrees in music from Yale. She also teaches choral conducting at the University of Bridgeport and is director of music and organist at Tabor Lutheran Church in Branford, Connecticut.

Lee, who began playing the carillon as a freshman, also plays the French horn, piano, and organ. A native of Vancouver, British Columbia, he will attend law school at the University of Toronto this fall. Both Espenschied and Lee are carillonneur members of the Guild of Carillonneurs in North America, a professional membership based on an applicant's examination and recital.

The Hopeman Memorial Carillon is located in the landmark tower of Rush Rhees Library. Concertgoers can bring blankets, lawn chairs, and picnic suppers and enjoy the peaceful summer ambiance of the River Campus while listening to the performance. The carillon summer recital series is sponsored by the Department of Music. For information, call 716-275-2828.
