Brockport village honors civic-minded couple

The Village of Brockport has proclaimed that the week of June 24 through June 30, 2001 be the Fletcher M. and Alice Garlock Week.

The husband and wife, both of whom are in ill health, are being honored for lifetimes of generosity and commitment to the Brockport community, particularly in the areas of local history and preservation efforts.

Fletcher Garlock is the great-grandson of reaper manufacturer Dayton S. Morgan and grandson of cold storage innovator Gifford Morgan, according to Village Historian Bill Andrews, who suggested the couple be honored. Alice Garlock is the granddaughter of Alfred C. Thompson, longtime village trustee and Normal School principal, according to Andrews.

Mr. and Mrs. Garlock were charter members and leaders of the Western Monroe Historical Society. Fletcher was a member of the Board of Directors of The Landmark Society of Western New York and Mrs. Garlock served on the village’s museum board for many years.

The couple is also noted for their efforts in the restoration of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church and the Alumni House on the campus of SUNY Brockport.

The proclamation concludes, "they have anonymously provided support to innumerable needy members and causes in our community and through their gracious and generous presence have enriched the life of this community beyond all measure."
