Area juniors to attend Empire Girl's State Sessions

Two Churchville-Chili juniors and one Spencerport junior have been chosen by units of the American Legion Auxiliary to attend the 51st Mythical State of the Empire Girls State program to be held the week of June 24-June 30 at Russell Sage College, in Troy.

They will be among the 360 Girl's State citizens to participate in the exercise in Americanism and the political process of government. They will form two political parties, conduct campaigns, do debates and write legislation about issues of government important to them. Mock legislative sessions for city, county and state levels will be held. They elect their own officers in various offices as well as Governor and Lt. Governor.

Stephanie Grakowsky, Buffalo Street, Churchville, daughter of Patrick and Joan Grakowsky, participated in the care team, a group trying to get youth to make healthy decisions. She also served as a peer tutor for fellow students and has studied dance since age four at Danceworks. She currently demonstrates dance to younger students.

Jordan Hawthorne, of Redfern Drive, Churchville, daughter of James and Joan Hawthorne, is sponsored by Robert Shaw Unit #100. She plays and enjoys varsity softball, volleyball and soccer. She participated on Model UN and served as junior representative for executive council and SAFE-Internship (Student for Action for Education). In her spare time she enjoys waterskiing.

Spencerport junior, Katlyn Marple, Bauer's Cove, Spencerport, daughter of Kay and Craig Marple, has been chosen to represent the Ferris Goodridge Unit #330.

Katlyn is a member of the National Honor Society, participated in chorus for seven years, women's chorus two years, band for eight years as well as marching band (clarinet). She is a member of S.T.A.G.E. Drama Club, performed in the past four shows and served as assistant director for two musicals. She co-founded Spring Fling, and participated in numerous NYSSMA solofests, all-county and area, and in All State choruses. She also serves as a peer mediator. She enjoys singing, acting, playing the clarinet and writing.
