Hilton Baptist Church welcomes new pastor
Pastor Walter T. Steenson has been called to minister to the people of Hilton Baptist Church and community. He will be in the pulpit on Sunday, August 5, offering his first sermon and sharing communion for the first time, as pastor of the Hilton Baptist Church family. more

Local youth group prepares for Romanian visitors
"They talked about how amazing it would be if they could come to America," Mary Johnson said of the teens she met in Romania last year. Now, the 13 Romanian teenagers will be hosted in the homes of Brockport's Christ Community Church families. One teen is already visiting the area, the others will be here by the end of July. more

Sidewalk Sale entertainment fills up
The Brockport Merchants Association Sidewalk Sale (July 12-14) entertainment schedule is loaded with activities. Featured events include Chess Day on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Participants can play on one of 18 chessboards or use the two-foot chess pieces played on a 13-foot square chessboard. All ages are invited to play and there will be gifts for all players. more

Stride Toward Freedom celebrates Emancipation Day
The Rochester-Monroe County Freedom Trail Commission presents "Stride Toward Freedom," a dramatic celebration commemorating New York state's freeing of those who had been enslaved since before New York became a state. From noon to 3 p.m., Saturday, July 7, New York Emancipation will be celebrated much as it was on July 5, 1827. more

Sweden residents continue to resist Bergen pole plans
The Village of Bergen held a condemnation hearing on June 27 for six Sweden properties whose owners have declined to sign easements that would allow the village to erect utility poles along West Sweden Road. A hearing for Town of Bergen property owners who have not signed easements for the same purpose was held the night before. more

Thirty Mile Point Lighthouse annual celebration
This year marks the sixth annual Summer Lighthouse celebration, and the 126th anniversary of Thirty Mile Point Lighthouse. more

Two Brockport business women take sacred journey
Gail Kihn, licensed massage therapist and owner of Pleiades Health Center in Brockport, and her colleague Jean Sauberan, Reiki practitioner and teacher, returned on June 23 from a ten-day tour of sacred healing sites in southwest and north central Ireland. The tour commenced in Shannon on the west coast and ended in Dublin on the east coast. It included visits to pre-Christian era holy wells, 5,000 year-old standing stone circles, Neolithic and Iron Age burial mounds and Megalithic artworks, early Christian ceremonial sites and grave yards, a Celtic Crystal Cave, and a fairy fort. more

AARP driving course set for August
The AARP Driver Safety Program can save up to 10 percent on auto insurance premiums and can forgive four points from violations. Participants or their spouse must be 50 years old. Preregistration is required. more

Annual Golden Retriever show to be held in Hamlin
Golden retriever dogs and their owners and trainers will come from several states and Canada to compete in conformation classes and obedience competitions. Prizes will be presented to the best golden retriever dogs in several classes beginning at 7 a.m. on July 6 at the Firemen's Field in Hamlin. The show will last all day. more

Camp Troutburg has space available
The Salvation Army has a limited number of openings available for children wishing to attend Camp Troutburg Summer Camp. Cost of camp is based on a sliding scale and financial assistance is available, making camp affordable for all families. Camp is open for children between the ages of 6 and 12 from Rochester and surrounding communities. more

Hamlin Public Library launches first summer reading program
The Friends of the Hamlin Public Library are sponsoring the library's first summer reading program. Program activities will be held each Wednesday at the library and will run for four weeks beginning July 11 through August 1. Registration begins Monday, July 2 at the library and runs through Wednesday, July 11. more

Kateland Farms Open House shows off miniature horses
An Open House and Miniature Horse Production Sale at Kateland Farms on Sunday, July 8 will offer a diversion of a different sort to those who attend. Thirty of the farm’s miniature horses will be for sale, including many pinto and weanlings, yearlings, breed mares and geldings. Trained driving horses will also be on the sales list, including several with winning show records. more

Orleans County youth show their llamas on TV
Several 4-H participants and their llamas from across Orleans County recently spent an afternoon filming for the "R Kids" cable television program. Film crews and Kids Reporter Kate Welshofer arrived at ABC Farms in West Barre where Amanda and Christopher Flansburg and their llamas, "Micky," "Bud" and "Gringo," demonstrated how to groom the animals, train them, and load them for travel to the Fair. The kids explained why they chose to raise llamas and how they are used for agricultural purposes. more

Parma-Hilton schedules boat trip
The Parma-Hilton Historical Society's July program will be a two hour boat trip, from 6 to 8 p.m., on Tuesday, July 17 on the Harbor Belle. The group will travel through the mouth of the Genesee River and the Bay area. An historic narration will accompany the trip. more

Salmon Creek bridge project design work continues
Monroe County has contracted with Om P. Popli, P.E., L.S., P.C. Consulting Engineers and Surveyors, in the amount of $50,034, for resident project representation services for the replacement of the Ogden-Parma Town Line Road Bridge over Salmon Creek, in the Town of Parma. more

Seymour Library kicks off summer reading
The summer reading program at the Seymour Library will begin on Monday, July 9 and run until Friday, August 17. The program is geared for readers preschool through fifth grade. more

Sweden approves cell tower application
The Town of Sweden has granted a permit to SBA, Inc. to construct a 100 foot tall telecommunications tower at 441 Sweden Ogden Townline Road on property owned by Paul Robinson. Cingular Wireless will be the main tenant on the lattice work tower, although SBA intends to recruit other users. more

BOCES 2 launches alternative high school for at-risk students
Beginning in September, the nine component districts that comprise Monroe 2-Orleans BOCES will have another alternative for at-risk students. Westside Academy, the new BOCES 2 alternative high school, will open its doors at Westview Commons on Buffalo Road in Gates in time for the 2001-2002 school year. At its helm will be Maureen Viel, who currently works for BOCES 2 as a secondary instructional specialist and will take over the position of principal on July 1. Viel also taught at the BOCES 2 Special Education Alternative High School for two years and at Greece Olympia High School for five years. more

Brockport selected for Consortium on
Trauma, Illness and Grief in schools
The Brockport Central School District has been selected by the American Red Cross to participate as a pilot school district in the Consortium on Trauma, Illness and Grief (TIG) in Schools. The purpose of the Consortium is to offer intensive training and ongoing support around the content areas of illness, grief, trauma and disaster reactions and interventions - not the logistics, which may be individual to each school district. As a pilot district, Brockport will help determine which of several training modules will be most useful for schools. more

GCC offers new scholarships to Hilton area students
Genesee Community College in Batavia is seeking at least two eligible students from the Hilton area to apply for and receive the college's new Citizenship Scholarship. The $1,000 scholarship is geared toward students who plan to attend Genesee and live in the college's new student residence. The Citizenship Scholarship is a competitive award given to students who have exhibited involvement and leadership in school, community, or church activities during their high school years. more

Students learn about paleontology
Holley fifth-grader Derek Kohmann reads information he wrote about dinosaurs to his schoolmates. He was part of a target group of students who worked with science educator Ron Walker (right) during a weeklong residency entitled "Paleontologists: Fossil Detectives," a Project ADEPT through Monroe 2-Orleans BOCES. more

New leader appointed for Byron-Bergen School District
Gregory Geer, Ed.D., is the new superintendent of the Byron-Bergen School District, effective August 1. Dr. Geer has served as principal of Eastridge Junior High School in the East Irondequoit District since 1996. more

Summer classes offered through H-P Recreation
Hilton-Parma Recreation is offering summer swim lessons for all levels of experience. Red Cross certified instructors and lifeguards will provide instruction. Two-week sessions for children will be held from July 16-27 and July 30-August 10. The cost is $38 per person per session. All participants are placed at a level that is most comfortable for them. more

Riga/Churchville seniors hold picnic July 10
The Senior Citizens of Riga/Churchville annual picnic will be held July 10 at Woody Acres in Mumford. Picnic is for members only, cost $5; participants should bring their own place setting. Meet at the American Legion on Buffalo Road at 11 a.m. to car pool. Those driving themselves can take Route 36 out of Churchville to Mumford; turn right at blinking light, pass Genesee Country Village to Neid Road; turn right. Participants can also bring auction items for the benefit of "Care and Share." more

Walkathon for senior meals is a success
Monroe County Executive Jack Doyle has announced that the county's Miles for Meals Walkathon raised nearly $58,000 for senior nutrition programs in the community. The fundraiser was held June 2, in Highland Park. more

Children's Soccer Clinic offered in Chili
The Chili Recreation Department offers its Summer Soccer Clinic with Doug May, head coach of Nazareth College, as instructor. The clinic will be held July 9 through 13 at Davis Park (Paul Road entrance) from 9 a.m. until noon. Children ages 8-12 are invited to participate. Fees are $45 for first child in a family, $35 for second, $25 for third. more

Churchville-Chili offers baseball camps
Registration is open for the Churchville-Chili Continuing Education Department's summer baseball camps. C-C varsity coach Pete Reynolds is the instructor. He will focus on skills such as throwing, fielding, pitching, hitting and defensive and offensive play. Coaches of the high school baseball program will help teach during the camps. In addition, there will be visits by area baseball coaches and players. more

Ogden Bears has openings for 2001 season
The Ogden Bears of the Western New York Pop Warner Football Conference still have openings on most levels for the upcoming 2001 season. more
