GCC offers new scholarships to Hilton area students

Genesee Community College in Batavia is seeking at least two eligible students from the Hilton area to apply for and receive the college's new Citizenship Scholarship. The $1,000 scholarship is geared toward students who plan to attend Genesee and live in the college's new student residence. The Citizenship Scholarship is a competitive award given to students who have exhibited involvement and leadership in school, community, or church activities during their high school years.

The Genesee Community College Foundation established the new scholarship program this spring to recognize outstanding student leaders in Western and Central New York communities that historically have sent students to Genesee.

Housing charges at the residence are $2,995 per year, which includes free local telephone service. The $1,000 Citizenship Scholarship brings housing costs to $1,995.

The Genesee Community College Foundation, a not-for-profit organization supporting the college and its students, is in the process of acquiring College Meadows apartments, a 75-unit apartment building adjacent to the Batavia Campus, this summer. Beginning this fall, the College Foundation and the college's Faculty-Student Association plan to open a new residential life program in the apartments for 170 students. The program includes evening and weekend activities, as well as opportunities for greater involvement in college clubs and organizations. The new student residence will be directed by full-time student life professionals, and include safety and security staff, and a strict no-alcohol policy.

Students may apply for Citizenship Scholarships by contacting their high school guidance departments or by contacting Genesee at (716) 345-6800.
