Brockport professors participate in Horses on Parade
Four unique designs were created for Rochester's Horses on Parade by SUNY Brockport Department of Art Associate Professor and Chair Jennifer Hecker; and faculty Emeriti Bill Stewart, Jack Wolsky, and Thomas Markusen, each recognized for their life-long contributions to the art community. Farm Service Agency reps see alarming trends in agriculture
Farmers are 'graying out' according to Farm Service Agency representatives. That graying out is causing the average age of area farmers to rise to 55 and not many of those family farmers are being passed down through the generations as they have been in the past, Larry Meyer, director of Orleans County's Farm Service Agency said. more

State issues recommendations for petting zoo, fair and farm visitors
Although one-on-one contact with farm animals serves as a rewarding and educational experience as many children enjoy petting farm animals, and can continue to do so, precautions should be taken to reduce health risks such as e.coli and rabies that are sometimes associated with direct animal contact. more

Brockport sees personnel changes
Brockport's new mayor, Josephine Matela, has made temporary personnel changes in the police department, pending the conclusion of the search for a new police chief. Sergeant Douglas Ziegler has been appointed acting police chief and Officer Mark Philippy will be acting sergeant. more

Few complaints about Sweden reassessment
Sweden residents who appeared at grievance day, May 22, received their notices of assessment reduction or rejection of their claim this week. Only 42 residential property owners appeared before the grievance board following the first town-wide reassessment in 30 years. Ten others reached an adjustment before meeting with the board; 15 commercial properties filed grievances by mail. more

Hamlin Library celebrates first anniversary
The Hamlin Public Library will celebrate the first anniversary of its opening, on Tuesday, July 10 at 7 p.m. The library is located at 422 Hamlin-Clarkson Townline Road. The celebration will include a short program and refreshments. more

Hazardous waste collection scheduled
Monroe County's Department of Environmental Services, along with the Towns of Clarkson, Sweden, Hamlin, and the Village of Brockport, will co-host a regional Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) collection at the Clarkson Highway Garage at 3623 Lake Road on Saturday, August 11, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. All drop-offs are by appointment only. more

Local selective service boards have vacancies
The Selective Service System is an independent federal agency whose mission is to maintain a system which can promptly and efficiently furnish untrained manpower for induction into the Armed Forces during a national emergency. Virtually all men must register with Selective Service when they turn 18. more

Parma Public Library hosts drawing for Bills tickets
Tackle the books this summer and score a chance to win tickets to the November 18 Bills home game vs. the Seattle Seahawks at Ralph Wilson Stadium. The Parma Public Library is participating in The UPS - Buffalo Bills Summer Reading Program. The contest runs through July 31 and is open to students in grades two - 12. more

Residents' input invited for soccer plex
Two Public Input Workshops for residents to offer comments and ask questions regarding the development of a Soccer Tournament Complex on land adjacent to Greece Canal Park have been scheduled by Monroe County officials. Residents can attend anytime between 3 and 8 p.m. to talk with county staff. more

Spencerport Chamber of Commerce seeks website volunteers
The Spencerport Area Chamber of Commerce recently registered the Internet domain name www.spencerportchamber.org as the first step in developing a Spencerport community website. The Chamber is confident that this website will become the online portal for information about Spencerport and Ogden for both residents and visitors. more

The Spencerport Canal Days Committee is seeking volunteers to assist in the Information Booth and in the Children's Activities tent on Saturday and Sunday, July 28 and 29. more

Springdale Farm, 696 Colby Street in Ogden, is offering family entertainment this summer during "Wendy's Wednesdays on the Farm," a series of theme days sponsored by Wendy's restaurants. GCC offers new scholarships to Churchville students
Genesee Community College is seeking at least two eligible students from the Churchville area to apply for and receive the college's new Citizenship Scholarship. The $1,000 scholarship is geared toward students who plan to attend Genesee and live in the college's new student residence. The Citizenship Scholarship is a competitive award given to students who have exhibited involvement and leadership in school, community, or church activities during their high school years. more

GCC receives approval for four new programs
Genesee Community College has received approval from the New York State Education Department to add four new degree and certificate training programs that address growing regional employment needs. more

Greece Central School District hosts Standards Institute
In response to the New York State Board of Regents mandate that all students graduate with a Regents' Diploma by 2004, the Greece Central School District will host a series of programs open to all New York educators. The Standards Institute - Pillars of Pedagogy - is scheduled for July 11-14 and August 6-10. more

The Hilton High School Class of 2001 Commencement Ceremony will be aired on Cable CH 12 Wednesday, July 11, and Wednesday, August 16, both at 7 p.m. more

Brockport athletes receive Scholar/Athlete Team Award
Brockport High School's Girls Varsity Spring Track, Boys Varsity Spring Track, and Boys Varsity Tennis teams recently received the New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) Scholar/Athlete Team Award for the spring 2001 season. The award is given to high school athletic teams who have maintained a high cumulative grade point average throughout their athletic season. more

Collamer-Jones Karate team wins 37 trophies
The Collamer-Jones (Gillam Grant) Karate Team won 37 trophies at the Isshinryu World Karate Championships held on June 23 in Indianapolis, Indiana. The team won praises from Okinawan Grand Master Kichiro Shimabuku for its efforts, which included 12 first, 15 second and 10 third places. The Collamer-Jones competition team was coached by Sensei Tammy Genagon. more

Hilton-Parma Recreation offers Tai Chi
Hilton-Parma Recreation is offering a continuation of their popular Tai Chi program this summer beginning Monday, July 9 and ending August 27 at the Village Community Center. Beginners will meet from 6 to 7:30 p.m. and intermediates or those "continuing the form" will meet from 7 to 9 p.m. Cost is $59. more

Three girls from Churchville-Chili who played on the Churchville-Chili Basketball JV team in 2001 were named to the St. John Fisher Basketball Camp NBA League All Star Team. more
