Brockport dropped from lawsuit
New York State Supreme Court Justice Andrew V. Siracuse has dropped the Village of Brockport and Monroe County from a $25 million lawsuit brought by a man who was paralyzed from the waist down in a motor vehicle accident September 30, 1999. more

Chili thruway exit will not be pursued
County Executive Jack Doyle has announced the Preliminary Initial Findings Report on the proposed Thruway Interchange 46A project in the Town of Chili. Based on this initial report, the thruway exit project will not move forward due to limited economic development potential. more

Churchville Lion nominated to international post
John Rabideau, a 26-year member of the Churchville Lions Club, was recently endorsed by the Lions of New York State and Bermuda, to be their candidate for international director. Rabideau was endorsed at the New York State and Bermuda Lions Convention in Saratoga Springs, April 27-29. Rabideau will be elected to the International Board of Directors of Lions Clubs International in Osaka, Japan in July 2002. more

D.O.T. to start roadside vegetation control
The Monroe County Department of Transportation plans to begin application of roadside herbicides to selected guiderail locations and signs posts on county highways. more

Dragon Boat Races to hit canal during Brockport Art Festival
New this year to the Brockport Summer Art Festival (August 11 and 12) will be Dragon Boat Racing - an Asian sport that is a fast growing water sport. more

Hear the best barbershop at the beach
Barbershop on the Beach, as it has been fondly referred to for 11 years, takes place on Sunday, July 22 from 1 to 8 p.m. at Ontario Beach Park, Rochester. This concert is free and open to the public. more

Hilton selects Citizen of the Year
The Hilton Village Board has chosen Al Howe as its 2001 Citizen of the Year. Howe has lived in Hilton since 1961 with his family. more

Kendall church to install pastor
The Rev. Stephen A. Brisson will be installed as pastor of Concordia Lutheran Church in Kendall on Sunday, July 22 at 4 p.m. more

Lakeside awarded $300,000 grant
The Kresge Foundation has awarded Lakeside Memorial Hospital a challenge grant of $300,000 in support of the Lakeside "Building for the Next Generation" Capital Campaign. more

Locally grown corn makes its 2001 debut
Many local farms are now picking early varieties of sweet corn this weekend. Picking will be in full swing around July 20, according to Bob King, agricultural specialist. The season runs from July 4 until hard frost in late September or early October. more

Monroe County Fair to hold twirling contest
On Wednesday, August 1, the Monroe County Fair will hold a Miss/Mr. Majorette Contest at 4:30 p.m. in the Barnstormers Festival Tent on the Fairgrounds. Three separate contests opened to all ages are planned; the Miss/Mr. Monroe County Fair; the Miss/Mr. Monroe County Majorette/Major and the Best Appearing Majorette/Major. Winners are eligible to enter the State Finals in the fall. more

Ogden Commission accepts Parks & Recreation report
At their May meeting the Ogden CASE (Commission to Analyze Savings & Efficiency) accepted a final Parks & Recreation report. The report recommended that as the town develops and moves forward, there becomes a real need for a formalized prioritized master plan for this department. Program needs, facilities and future parks should be studied, pursued and recommended to the town board. more

Parma resident turns 100
Bailey Road resident Henrietta Decker turned 100 years of age on July 12 and was feted at celebrations at the Trinity United Methodist Church in Frewsburg, New York and the First Bible Baptist Church on North Greece Road. more

Retiring food shelf director honored
Mary Ellen Baker, director of the Brockport Ecumenical Food Shelf for the past 10 years, retired June 30. She was honored for her long service at a picnic and presentation ceremony at the home of Bill and Monika Andrews, 46 College Street, on June 27. About 25 members of the food shelf's board of directors, volunteers, and their families attended. more

Work scheduled to begin on Spencerport School District's capital project
Work is scheduled to begin as early as July 23 on the Spencerport School District's capital project. Bids for the first phase of the project, which includes asbestos abatement and new roofing at the high school and middle school, opened July 11. more

Youth Bureau begins 2002 funding process
Each year, the Genesee-Orleans Youth Bureau administers population-based state aid made available to Genesee and Orleans Counties by the NYS Office of Children and Family Services. In each county, the Youth Board reviews all proposals and submits funding recommendations to the County Legislature for final approval. Funding is available for youth development programs that serve youth up to age 21. Priority is given to programs that focus on asset development and risk reduction. more

The Hilton Fire Department has the largest carnival in Western New York state. This year's carnival should be one of the best with all new rides and attractions. The dates are from July 25 through July 28. more

Applicants sought for Hilton Board of Ed
Newly-elected member of the Hilton School District Board of Education, Dr. James J. Giordano, resigned from the board at its July 3 meeting as he accepted the position of Superintendent of Schools in the Hammondsport Central School District. The board decided to fill the remainder of this year's term through an appointment process. The remaining two years of the three-year term will be filled at the May 21, 2002 election. more

Audubon Society invites public to July 23 meeting
The Genesee Valley Audubon Society cordially invites all interested residents of the Town of Greece and surrounding areas to a presentation on Monday, July 23, at 7 p.m. in the Greece Town Hall Community Meeting Room on the subject of habitat preservation and its relationship to migratory birds. more

Brockport Summer Art Festival offers more art, music and food
The annual Brockport Summer Art Festival has been condensed into two days of endless activity this year. It will be held 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., Saturday, August 11, and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Sunday, August 12, along the Main Street in the historic Village of Brockport. Admission is free. more

Lila McCann to open county fair
National country singer Lila McCann will perform in concert on opening night of the 2001 Monroe County Fair in Henrietta on Wednesday, August 1 at 9:15 p.m. McCann will perform on the Wegmans Heritage Stage in Heritage Village at the fair. Admission to Heritage Village and to the concert is free with fair admission. Tickets for a limited number of "gold circle" seats are currently available at Wegmans Video Departments for $7 plus a service fee. The Wegmans tickets include fair admission. more

Spencerport Board of Education schedules special meeting
There will be a special meeting of the Board of Education of the Spencerport Central School District on Monday, July 16, at 6 p.m. The board will meet to re-view and award bids for asbestos abate-ment, flooring and roofing work at both the Cosgrove Middle School and Spencerport High School as part of the $46,991,500 Capital Project approved by Spencerport School District voters on March 8, 2000. more

The Barre Deli supports the seniors of Orleans County
For the past six years, Mora and Jerry Edwards, owners of the Barre Deli, have sponsored a charity golf tournament benefiting everyone from a little girl born with a severe birth defect to the Meals-On-Wheels program and the Orleans County Office for the Aging's Personal Emergency Response System Program (Lifeline). more

Town Park Express to begin
The Town of Parma will begin supplying a daily transportation service from the Village Community Center to the Parma Town Hall Park beginning Monday, July 16. Van transportation will be provided from the Village Community Center at noon and return from the Town Hall Park at 3 p.m., Monday through Friday. more

BOCES food preparation course receives certification
Kevin Bedard is on his way to making the BOCES 2 Career and Technical Education Center the first school in Western New York to receive national certification for its Food Preparation course. After becoming personally certified this year, Bedard began working with the Pro Start School-To-Career Program to gain course certification. more

Brockport High School receives RIT certification
Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) has recognized Brockport High School by certifying its Project Lead The Way (PLTW) Pre-Engineering Technology Program. RIT Professor Guy Johnson, director of RIT's and PLTW's National Training Center, said that Brockport High School has demonstrated its commitment to the quality standards of the PLTW program by having its pre-engineering teachers trained during the summer at RIT and by teaching the specific courses using the latest computer software. more

Hilton Village School young poets honored
Eighteen young poets in Hilton's Village Elementary School have been honored by inclusion of their poetry in an anthology, Creative Communication's A Celebration of Young Poets. more

Senior Day designated at Monroe County Fair
August 2 will be Senior Day at the Monroe County Fair. Seniors, ages 60 and up, will receive free gate admission which includes Heritage Village, all exhibits, Festival Tent, grounds entertainment featuring the Wild West Follies, the Star Family Circus and the Giant Puppets on Parade. Seniors are also invited to the free Senior Bingo For Fun at 4:30 p.m. in the Festival Tent. Pfizer Pharmaceuticals will conduct free health screenings including blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar tests as well as a sexual health inventory at their exhibit booth in the Dome. Midway rides, grandstand and parking is extra. more

Bergen woman promoted to seventh degree black belt
Martial Arts Instructor Cyndy Jones of Bergen was recently promoted to ShiChi Dan (seventh degree black belt) by Okinawan Grand Karate Master Kichiro Shimabuku. She is the highest ranked female instructor in his Isshin Ryu World Karate Association (IWKA). This promotion was a great honor for her and for her Collamer-Jones (Gillam Grant) Karate School as well. more

Brockport Soccer Festival comes to town
The Brockport Soccer Festival is being held from July 20-22 at the SUNY Brockport, Brockport High School and the Town of Clarkson sports fields. First games start at 4:30 p.m. on Friday with the Championship games being played Sunday afternoon. more

Castellano chosen top sports radio voice
Joe Castellano, the Rochester Red Wings baseball network radio play broadcasting sports announcer, was recently elected by the Monroe County Old-timers Sports Association as the top sports radio voice in the area with 483 votes. The Press Radio Club voted Castellano in 2000 as tops with his smooth golden voice. more

Hilton Sports Teams achieve Scholar Athlete Awards
The Hilton High School Office of Athletics, Health and Physical Education has announced that 21 Hilton Varsity interscholastic teams qualified for the New York State Public High School Athletic Association - Scholar Athlete Team Award. more

Monroe County Girls Sports Festival scheduled
The Monroe County Sports Development Corporation will host the fourth Annual Monroe County Girls Sports Festival, on Saturday, August 4 at Frontier Field from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The annual festival, presented by Outback Steakhouse, is a one-day event for girls between the ages of eight and 14. Participants are able to experience sports in a non-competitive atmosphere. No experience is necessary. Registration forms are available by calling 262-3832. more
