Betty S. Neuscheler, retired school teacher

Betty S. Neuscheler, 80, a retired teacher, died July 3, 2001 in Arizona. She was born in Oriskany, New York on January 3, 1921. She moved from Brockport to Glendale, Arizona in 1978. Survivors include her husband of 58 years, Carl; twin sons, Carl Jr. (Lisa) of Wilton, Connecticut, Thomas of Rochester; four grandchildren, Scott, Todd, Krystine and Brett; one great grandchild, Andee Marie and her brother, Charles, of Palm Bay, Florida. A brother, Fred, predeceased her. She had many nieces, nephews and cousins.

An alumnus of SUNY at Oswego, she taught elementary education at Clark Mills. Betty and Carl moved to Brockport in January 1946. Twin boys were born on September 20, 1946, which kept her very busy for seven years, according to family members.

She started teaching in the Brockport Central School system in 1953 as a kindergarten teacher. She became chairperson of the kindergarten department of 13 teachers and served a year as president of the Brockport Central School Teachers Association. She also enjoyed teaching a kindergarten Sunday School class for several years in the First Presbyterian Church in Brockport.

Betty spent many years as a volunteer for charitable causes, among them the March of Dimes. She treasured her membership in the Magnolia Twig of the Brockport Lakeside Hospital, and was a founding member of the hospital library. Upon retiring from teaching, Betty resumed her favorite hobby of quilting, joining the Genesee Valley Quilt Club of Rochester.

•Lake, Margaret T., Of Kent, formerly of Hilton, on July 10, 2001. Predeceased by husband, Harry W. She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Janyce and Bill Cockram; step-son and daughter-in-law, George and Darlene Lake; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

A Funeral Service was held July 13 at Arndt Funeral Home. Entombment, White Haven Memorial Park. Those wishing can make contributions to Kendall Volunteer Ambulance or Open Door Mission.


BERGEN

•Gruendike, Harold B. Jr. "Butch," Monday, July 9, 2001. He is survived by his loving wife, Jean (Morgan); one son, William John (Tammy); three grandchildren, Erica, Jordan and Tristan; one sister, Betty Tesch; several nieces and nephews.

A Memorial Service was held July 11 at the Lutheran Church of Our Savior. Interment private at Stone Church Rural Cemetery, Bergen. Memorials can be made to the Lutheran Church of Our Savior, 2415 Chili Avenue, Rochester 14624.


•McGrath, Linda Sue, July 8, 2001 at age 40. Reading teacher at Brockport Central School. Daughter of Friend and Beverly Haupt Williams of Barker and Lakeland, Florida; wife of Michael A. McGrath of Bergen; mother of Zachary McGrath and Caitlin McGrath, both of Bergen; daughter-in-law of Rupert and Mary McGrath of Syracuse; sister of Randy Williams of North Carolina; sister-in-law of Randy (Annette) McGrath of Churchville, Kathie (Dave) Babcock of Minnesota and Robin McGrath of Syracuse.

Services were held July 12 at Northgate Free Methodist Church. Interment North Chili Rural Cemetery. Memorials can be made to Northgate Free Methodist Church, 350 Bank Street, Batavia 14020.


BROCKPORT

•Benzing, Alfred I. "Al," On July 6, 2001 after a long illness. Predeceased by his parents, Irv and Phyllis Benzing; his sister, Phyllis Schoenig. He is survived by his wife, Betty J. Benzing; his daughter, Chris (Randy) Butler of Atlanta, Georgia; his son, Dan (Sue) Benzing of Tucson, Arizona; his sisters, Gerry Gilbert, Mary Shaver, Jackie Benzing; his brother, JR (Anita) Benzing of Florida; two granddaughters; also many nieces and nephews.

A Funeral Mass was held July 9 at Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church, Brockport. Interment at the convenience of the family. Those wishing can make contributions to the American Cancer Society in his memory.


•Caton, Arthur A., On June 17, 2001. A Memorial Service will be held July 16 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Brockport Exempt, 212 West Avenue.


CHURCHVILLE

•Leathersich, Helen A. (Whitaker), Monday, July 9, 2001 at age 89. She was predeceased by her husband, David Leathersich. She is survived by her children, Shirley Zastrocky of Bergen, Harry (Phyllis) Leathersich of Spencerport, Sylvia (Richard) Watson of Canandaigua, Linda Burlingame of Churchville, Donald (Nicolette) Leathersich of Rochester; two brothers, Floyd (Dorothy) Whitaker of Spencerport, Lawrence (Marie) Whitaker of North Chili; three sisters, Edna (Monroe) House of Spencer, Dorothy McCowan of LeRoy, Betty McCracken of Hilton; 22 grandchildren; 41 great grandchildren; four great great grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services were held July 12 at Union Congregational United Church of Christ, Churchville. Interment Mumford Rural Cemetery. Contributions can be made to the Memorial Fund of Union Congregational UCC or the Memorial Fund of St. John's Home in her memory.


•Mulrain, Elinor A. (Whalls), Sunday, July 8, 2001 at age 78. She was predeceased by her husband, Howard Mulrain and her infant son, Douglas. She is survived by three sons, Gary (Michele) of Akron, NY, William of Churchville and Paul of Churchville; three daughters, Marsha (Jerome) Vaiana of Bloomfield, Laurie (Craig) Wilson of Churchville and Linda (James) Crist of Brockport; 13 grandchildren, Luke, Ethan and Tara Vaiana, Jason, Tiffany, Garrett and Whitney Mulrain, Bret and Nicholas Mulrain, Cody and Jenny Wilson, Lindsay and Erin Crist; her sister, Jean (Harold) Phillips of Canada; several nieces and nephews.

A Funeral Mass was said July 13 at Holy Ghost Church. Interment, Holy Ghost Cemetery. Contributions can be made to the American Heart Association in her memory.


HAMLIN

•Sisson, Elmer L. III "Lorry," On July 1, 2001. He is survived by his mother, A. Cathrine Nash; his son, Richard (Christina) Nash; grandson, Kyle; his aunt, Alice L. (Ray) Heck; dear friends, Rosemary Arnold, Frances McIlmurray and families. He was predeceased by his step-father, Wesley H. Nash.

•Clapper, Harry L., On April 2, 2001 at age 91. He is survived by his daughter, Jean Anne (Frederick) Woodruff III; four granddaughters; devoted friend, Dick (Nancy) Barnes; many friends.

•Hall, Michelle V., Suddenly, at the age of 47, on July 4, 2001. She is survived by her mother, Catherine Luttman; special friend, George Gorman; and his children, Adam and Gretchen Gorman; and good friend, Jackie Balmer; and her children, Tanya, Myrna and Allan Balmer. Also survived by many close friends and her extended family at A.B.A.T.E. of Monroe County.

•Cammarata, Russell A., On July 4, 2001. Predeceased by his wife, Bessie Cammarata (Giardino). Survived by his children Louise (Charles LaVerde) Cocilovo and Salvatore (Patricia) Cammarata; six grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; several sisters-in-law, brother-in-law, nieces and nephews; caregiver Luis Mora. He was a veteran of WWII and retired from Peko Precision Products.
