The Spencerport Volunteer Ambulance (SVA) is conducting a dual campaign this summer. Their two goals are to bring on new volunteers and generate donations toward the purchase of new emergency vehicles.

Currently, SVA is dramatically understaffed and is looking to double their volunteer personnel. Positions are available for medics, dispatchers, drivers and support staff. Training in first aid and EMT basic and advanced training is provided at no charge to volunteers.

SVA is also seeking financial contributions so that they can replace their aging ambulance and advanced life support vehicles.

"Just like any automobile, ambulances and emergency vehicles need to be replaced after several years of use. We want to be able to rely on this critical transportation when it's needed," says Emergency Preparedness Manager Jeff Tewksbury. "People who need an ambulance take for granted that a vehicle will show up quickly for them. We want to make sure that happens."

SVA headquarters at 116 Lyell Avenue in Spencerport also offers services to walk-in clients, including blood pressure screenings and medical loans such as crutches and wheelchairs.

Volunteers will be on hand at SVA's tent at Spencerport Canal Days, July 28-29. Visitors are invited to stop by for free blood pressure screenings and find out how they can help the community through volunteering or contributing to Spencerport Volunteer Ambulance.
